Georgia faces fifth suit challenging new voting law
The state of Georgia is facing another lawsuit against its new voting law from a coalition of voting rights groups.
The Georgia law, passed last month along party lines, imposes restrictions that voting rights groups say will fall most heavily on minorities. It sets new voter ID requirements for absentee ballots, limits drop boxes and even bars passing out food and water to those waiting in line to vote.
"Georgia's recent election experience demonstrated the overwhelming support for election laws that allow voters to cast their ballot safely and freely, whether they live in a small town or big city, so that every voice is heard and elections in the state reflect the will of the voters," Paul Smith, vice president for litigation and strategy at Campaign Legal Center, wrote in a statement Wednesday when the lawsuit was filed.

Georgia secretary of state certifies Warnock, Ossoff victories in Senate runoffs
Georgia's top election official on Tuesday certified Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff as the winners of two closely watched Senate runoffs, affirming a pair of Democratic victories that will effectively hand the party control of the upper chamber.
The certification of the runoff results by Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) comes as Democrats prepare to take power in Washington. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are slated to be sworn in Wednesday.

GOP Georgia senators throw support behind $2,000 stimulus checks
Sens. David Perdue (R-Ga.) and Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) on Tuesday threw their support behind a President Trump-backed effort to increase the amount of recently passed stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000.
The endorsement from the two senators - who are sticking closely with President Trump as they fight for their political lives in next week's Georgia runoff elections - comes after the legislation passed the House on Monday in a 275-134 vote.
"I'm delighted to support the president in this $2,000. ... So I fully support what the president is doing right now," Perdue said during an interview with Fox News on Tuesday.

Georgia pastors blast Loeffler campaign criticisms of Warnock as 'attack against the Black Church'
Georgia pastors blasted Sen. Kelly Loeffler's (R-Ga.) campaign on Saturday for its criticisms of Democratic opponent Rev. Raphael Warnock, calling them an "attack against the Black Church."
More than 100 religious leaders criticized Loeffler and her campaign in an open letter Saturday for their framing of Warnock, the senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta where Martin Luther King Jr. used to preach, as a "radical" and a "socialist."

Georgia sets new voting record for runoffs
More people cast ballots on the first day of early voting in Georgia's Senate runoffs this week than those that did so when early voting opened ahead of the 2020 general election.
Roughly 168,000 Georgians went to the polls on Monday, the first day to vote early in-person in the state's two critical Senate runoff elections, according to numbers provided by the Georgia secretary of state's office. By comparison, some 128,000 voted on the first day of early voting for the November general election.
Another 314,000 people cast absentee ballots on the first day of the early-voting period.
