Manila’s foreign office said Tuesday it had summoned Beijing’s ambassador for the first time to discuss the “illegal lingering presence” of Chinese ships moored in its exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea, as the Philippines stepped up its protest on the issue.
Meanwhile late Tuesday, a government task force said that Philippine military patrols over the weekend had spotted hundreds of Chinese Maritime Military ships also “lingering” in different Philippine-claimed areas of the disputed waterway.
Undersecretary Elizabeth Buensuceso said she met Chinese Ambassador Huang Xi Lian at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday and repeated Manila’s demand that Beijing withdraw the ships. ....

The chase of a Philippine civilian boat by China’s sea assets such as its coast guard and the Type 022 Houbei fast attack craft with two mounted missiles in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and later way into Palawan is tantamount to territorial incursion, former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario said on Friday.

Given this latest incident, Del Rosario reiterated his call for the sending of a “demarche” or a direct, purposeful, and pointed petition or protest against China.
The United Nations, according to the former DFA secretary, may be informed through the office of the UN secretary-general.  ....

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 10) The Armed Forces of the Philippines is being criticized for its response to a Filipino television news crew s report that they were driven away by Chinese Navy and Coast Guard vessels while on board a civilian boat in the West Philippine Sea.
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, however, took exception to this portion of the AFP statement: While we understand the journalists insatiable desire to be ahead in reporting, we appeal to them to exercise prudence in the course of their job.
The AFP also noted it has been forthright and transparent about the situation in the country s exclusive economic zone, and previously gave some members of the media access to maritime patrol so they can be protected while in the practice of their profession. ....
