$6250 for each of his 28 years behind bars. from 2016 to 2020, 374 people wrongfully convicted of murder, 61% african-americans, have reunited with their families together they spent over 6000 years in prison. years. years they will never get back. that s all for this edition of dateline. i am craig melvin. thank you for watching. i am craig melvin and this is dateline. leading up to this assign what it was going to be like. i had so many thoughts leading to this assignment as to what it would be like. trying to imagine going down isoad, knowing it s a one- way trip. this moment where you get your last glimpse of the world around you, but that glimpse is through steelman mesh. louisiana highway 66. it s beautiful countryside and undoubtedly not lost on the countless men driven to the place where they will most likely die. that road ends here. the louisiana state penitentiary, a former plantation. the size of manhattan. 28 square miles. most people call it angola named after the african country that was home to the slaves who once worked these very fields. now, angola is the largest maximum-security prison in the country where today, i will be housed with about 5500 men. i am heading into ground zero of mass incarceration. there is a heightened awareness as i walked through here with no guards. for the next couple of days, i will be staying here, exploring key issues of the person reform debate. juveniles sentenced to life without parole. we were children when we got incarcerated. the lasting effect of the war on drugs. the power of rehabilitation. your life is worthwhile. the demand by many for punishment. i think he s where he needs to be. i will stay in a cell to better understand the purpose and experience of prison all from the inside. hello and welcome to dateline. we have all heard the saying, lock him up and throw away the key. critics say that has been our country s approach for crime for two we long. they question whether mass incarceration is keeping a safer and what lengthy prison terms mean for many of the more than 2 million americans behind bars. lester holt spent three days in one of the nation mesquite toughest penitentiary and this is what he witnessed. here is his special report. life inside. life it angola prison is not what you might imagine. the vast majority live like this. more than 80 men and open dorms, sleeping on bunkbeds. i will be staying in a unit next to death row for high risk offenders are in my case, a high-profile guest. we will go down here. my home will be on a tier called ccr a closed cell restriction. the men here are locked in their cells 23 hours a day. i am given sheets, slippers, and toiletries and shown to my cell. cell 11. go in here, please. go ahead and close. naturally, phones are not allowed. all i have is my journal, a pen, a novel, my watch, and am/fm radio. i have cameras around me installed by our crew to record my experience and my thoughts. as journalists, we note to get to the heart of something have to get inside it. the closer you are to something, the more is revealed to you. i soon meet my neighbor, william curtis who is serving a life sentence for second-degree murder. he tells me he is locked in ccr because he has tried to escape multiple times. how far did you get? not very. he s only allowed out one hour a day. do you go out? not very often. the last time was probably four years ago. you haven t seen the sun in four years? i just want to get through the night. take care of yourself. we will be here a couple of days. i quickly learned the falling asleep in prison is challenging. the toilets flush loudly and often. cell to cell chatter that lasts well into the night. my bed is attached to the wall to curtis is so when he moves around, i feel it. the bed is not much for comfort. it s kind of a plastic mattress, but it did the trick. i slept okay. breakfast arrives at 5:30 a.m., delivered by a prisoner. in case you are wondering, it s scrambled eggs, grits and biscuits to the sound of a flushing toilet. no country on earth locks up more of its citizens than the united states. while we make less than 5% of the world s population, we lock up more than 20% of the world s prisoners. politicians, academics, and activists say mass incarceration is an american crisis. we ve gone from $6 billion in spending to $80 billion today. a civil rights lawyer brian stevenson is one of the nation s leading prison reform advocates. we have hundreds of thousands of people in prison who are not a threat. is it about safety or punishment? life. without parole. terry mays shot a man in the neck during a drug deal. you ve been here how many years? 30. like prisons everywhere in america, most inmates get paid pennies per hour. how much do you get paid? two cents an hour. this job is not one of the more desired once? it is the bottom of the barrel. nobody want to be in the field. angola is not like any other maximum-security prison i ve ever been to. all of this is angola. a series of prisons. they call them camps. you are from camp d? yes, sir. today to today we are picking carrots. should i be worried about my safety? well, if use an inmate, most definitely. a majority of the inmates are people of color. in fact, black men in america are six times as likely to be incarcerated as white men. i certainly cannot escape the optics. look around, mostly black men working on a former slave plantation under the watch of armed guards on horseback. it is unsettling to many. i know it s a sensitive subject and it troubled me a little bit. it made me uncomfortable talking to the guys. most of them look like me. african american. the history of this land as a slave plantation. do you see that as an issue? i can see how someone would have an issue with the. every land in louisiana was a slave plantation. growing vegetables, it s something given back to the prison itself. smith said the crops provide the inmate population fresh food but he says it saves taxpayers money. it costs $1.70 a day to feed each offender. this will be the life for many of these men for decades to come. some have left young children behind who are among the 5 million kids in america who have had a parent in prison. jovan t has two of them. you know the way it works. you are in prison, your dad in prison, your kids and children. are you afraid for your children? i definitely am. my father got murdered when i was three years old. i never knew him. it is hard to imagine knowing you will spend the rest of your life here. especially if you are convicted as a teenager. advocates like brian stevenson say juvenile offenders should never be treated the same as an adult. we put thousands of kids and adult jails and start prosecuting the kids and states with no minimum age being tried as an adult. we should never put children and adult jails. what about one commit violent crimes like murder? we were children and we got incarcerated. i m sitting in on a support room support group. they committed crimes before adults and given sentences of life without the possibility of parole. they are called juvenile lifers. i was 16. i was 17. i committed my crime at the age of 16. 2000 juvenile lifers like them and presented a. i was different at 17 then i am at 60 now. at 17, i knew right from wrong. how do you reconcile that? you have to be accountable. there s no excuse for what i did or what any of us done. they tell me they are no longer the boys they once were and are no longer a threat to society. how do i know they are not conning me? when we got the opportunity to show we are different, people could see. in the past few years, they have gotten new hope to make their case for a second chance. what gives you hope? right there. that s our man right there. state of louisiana. montgomery versus state of louisiana is a landmark supreme court ruling named after the oldest and longest serving member of this group. henry montgomery who is 72 years old when i met him. you were 17 years old when your sentence. do you remember what it was like to be 17? yeah. young and stupid. montgomery was indicted for murder in november 1963. the same month jfk was assassinated. he has been at angola for 55 years. i am behind 55 years. technology, i am 150 years behind. in 2012, the u.s. supreme court ruled mandatory life without parole sentences for juveniles are unconstitutional, pointing to science that says it s clear that adolescent brains are not yet fully mature. that ruling did not apply to people like henry montgomery who had already been sent away as a juvenile. that is why montgomery took his case to the supreme court and in 2016, he won. now, all juvenile lifers, no matter how long ago they were locked up can make a case that they deserve parole. mostly older guys over here? this 70-year-old clifford is one of them. i went to see him in the dorm where he lives. this is my bed right here. he has been locked up 61 years. since you have been here we have landed a man on the moon. think about that. there have been a lot of changes. six decades in prison have changed him and thanks to the man sitting next to him, hampton, he will have a chance at freedom. why do you think you deserve parole? i would not say i deserve parole. i would not use that word deserve because i took someone s life. i could say that i have earned parole. and faked, hampton and montgomery will see the parole board the same day and i will be there. how are you feeling? u feeling? lester holt (voiceover): one of the things that struck me while walking around angola was how many men i met who seemed to be focused one of the things that struck onme while walking aroun angola was how many men i met who seemed to be focused on changing their lives. one of them is dalton. i knew i had to do something different than just do time and die in prison. since coming to angola in 2004, he says he has turned his life around by taking advantage of the person s programs. i graduated with a ba, 3.91 average. he earned a masters degree from a bible college. he became an ordained minister. a couple of times a week, gospel raps his former preaching to the population. it is hard to square the man sitting across with me with the horrible crime he committed. your actions caused the death of a baby. yeah. when he was 21, he was watching a stepson. the child was inconsolable. he shook the baby so violently he died. now he is serving a 60 year sentence for manslaughter. how do you move past that? [music playing] - [narrator] life with ear ringing sounded like a constant train whistle i couldn t escape. then i started taking lipo flavonoid. with 60 years of clinical experience, it s the number one doctor recommended brand for ear ringing. and now i m finally free. take back control with lipo flavonoid. former president trump is set to virtually meet with a probation officer later today. becomes a little over week after his conviction on 34 felony counts in his hush money trial. the sentencing is set for july 11. police in madison, wisconsin, are investigating after a early morning shooting that left 10 injured. none of the injuries are considered life-threatening and no suspect or motive has been identified. i m craig melvin. does the punishment fit the crime? welcome back to dateline. i am craig melvin. does the punishment fit the crime? it is a question at the heart of the prisoner debate especially when it comes to drug-related offenses. for the man you are about to make, parole board answer could mean the difference between a second chance at life or growing old and dying behind bars. back to lester holt with life inside. and my three days at angola, most of the men i spoke with had committed violent crimes and received long sentences. life without parole. yeah. like every person, there are nonviolent offenders serving laws sentences that might as well be life. john is one of them. i grew up in a middle-class neighborhood. he s a war vet that said he was lost and broken when he came home. i had no direction in life. in 2000, he was found guilty of running a massive drug ring that moved kilos of cocaine between texas and louisiana. it was his second drug conviction. my sentence was 150 years. that s right. 150 years and he is served 20 so far as. s case is a prime example of harsh sentencing laws for drug dealers and users the legacy of the government s decades long war on drugs. more than 450,000 people in america are locked up for a drug offense. brian said criminalizing drug addiction is misguided. we said this people are criminals and we did not have to say that. we could of said drug addiction is a health problem. is that why jails are so full? absolutely. this misguided war on drugs is at the top of the list. things have been changing. the first step act which was signed into law by former president trump in 2018 had been projected to reduce the sentences of thousands of nonviolent offenders in federal prisons. that does not affect more than 90% of the u.s. prison population which is locked up in state and local facilities. some states had already been relaxing sentencing guidelines like in louisiana which started in 2001. epstein was sentenced under the older and harsher laws so he sued the state and one co-which earned him a date with the parole board. now, he is just hours away. i am not a troublemaker. it s about debilitation. i m a little nervous. thinking about things. trying to get my mind that the possibility of me being released. you are making a way for all of us here. be blessed. his 31-year-old son, a law school graduate, came to surprise him. a three-member panel must vote unanimously to grant parole. our cameras were not allowed inside the parole hearing room. about an hour later, his family walked out first. he made it. i made it. i made it. we were there for his first steps as a free man in 20 years. oh, have mercy. [ crying ] two other people are eager to follow him out that gate. henry montgomery and clay after clifford hampton who served a combined 116 years are about to face the parole board themselves. do you think you should be paroled? i should be. i m 55 years older. i am mature enough to know i ain t going to do that again. that might not matter. this is his second parole hearing. he was denied a year before and it seems clear to many why armory is still in prison. you killed a cop. yeah. the man he murder was deputy sheriff charles from east baton rouge. in november 1963, montgomery then 17 years old was playing hooky when the deputy and plainclothes approached him. montgomery said as a black teenager living in the segregated south, he was startled and scared and was carrying a gun and he shot him. i had the gun in my hand and i shot him. i did it and i am sorry. they say it doesn t matter how montgomery feels. what does matter is he stays behind bars. attack on a police officer s attack on the very fabric of society. he is the victim in grandson and today he is a police officer himself. there is no parole for charles. his life sentences permanent. my mom, my aunt, my uncle, our belief in the system is its equal justice. the family of clifford s victim did not want to speak to us on camera but they told us they do not think he should get out either. in 1958, when he was 17, he got in an argument with his 18-year- old neighbor. he flew into a rage and brutally stabbed her to death. i realize what i had did, i walked to the home of the deputy sheriff and turned myself in ski. he has another hurdle to overcome. in 1961, at age 20, he killed another inmate. he told me it was self-defense. angola was like a jungle. that s what you had to do. kill or go under. hampton and montgomery will soon find out if they will be granted parole, but if they are tonight, they could eventually end up where i am heading next. the hospice word. when i want to feel my most powerful, it starts with venus. with five ultra-sharp blades and water-activated serums for incredible glide. i feel the difference with every stroke. feel the power of smooth. (announcer) you can quit. call 1-800-quit-now for help getting free medication. what is cirkul? cirkul is the fuel you need to take flight. cirkul is the energy that gets you to the next level. cirkul is what you hope for when life tosses lemons your way. cirkul, available at walmart and drinkcirkul.com. lester holt: like every maximum security prison, angola can be a dangerous place. let every maximum-security prison, angola can be a dangerous place. on this morning, knife is found and when that happens, this is the response. a shakedown. this appears to be crushed and medication. we ve seen a couple shakedowns, what do you find? weapons, drugs. they along with assistant warden said being a corrections officer is among the toughest jobs in the world. you ve had things that have raised anxiety. absolutely. i m 34 and on anxiety medicine. studies have shown corrections officers have a higher suicide rate than the general population. can you give me some specific anecdotes of things that have happened to you? i had human waste thrown at me. what can you do? he already has life. the institution is understaffed and the officers say they are underpaid. we start people off at $14 an hour. people in the free world can go to home depot and make the same amount of money and not get feces thrown at them. poor behavior is often the result of hopeless men. the assistant warden said one of the things that is help to something i was surprised to learn that the majority of the officers here are women. there is value in the female officers. we can sometimes talk an offender down a lot quicker. just because we have a calming ability. something else i did not expect to hear. they believe that life without parole sentences makes person less safer everyone. if a man has life he has nothing to lose. he knows there s no chance of going home. i heard the same from many who work your. tonya works in the hospice unit. i would love to see these guys get a second chance. i worry about backlash i would get from that. i know the outside public perception is they are supposed to be here. was there a period in your life you would ve been on the other side? absolutely. my mother worked here as a security guard and i said how can you work with those people? when you get here and you hear some of the stories, no one is the same person from when they were younger to now. decades in prison would change anyone. there is an aging crisis in american prisons. more than 130,000 inmates older than 55 are incarcerated today. that is costing taxpayers more than $9 billion a year. experts say the aging and dying are the most expensive people to keep incarcerated and yet they pose the lowest risk to society. this is what a life sentence looks like when life is running out. dying prisoners being cared for in hospice by other incarcerated men. 63-year-old frank has been in prison for 45 years. when he was 19, he and his younger brother robbed a store, crime that ended with the murder of the owner. now, dying of cancer, he has asked for a compassionate release. the vast majority of petitioners for compassionate release are denied and so was frank. how are you feeling? lester holt. oh, yeah. we are going to have a nice conversation. do you think you should go home? can you give me a candy? it helps my throat. there you go. all right. i will let you rest. he is a human being. i am not here to judge him. but, i don t know how you don t have compassion. a few weeks later, i learned that frank died in his hospice bed alone. back in my cell, i had a lot of time to reflect about everything i have seen. i wrestle with the question of his prison punishment? if it s punishment, it s pretty bad. is it a place of reform? you can see efforts to reform here. i cannot help thinking as we are talking to men incarcerated when they were teenagers, and i think of myself at 16, 17 years old, it s very complicated. and now, the two man i met who committed murders as teenagers, henry montgomery, and clifford hampton are about to find out if they will finally get parole and walked back out into the world. world. mommy, what do you love to do? we could all unsubscribe and switch to xfinity. their connection is unreal. and we could all un-experience this whole session. okay, that s uncalled for. lester holt: if there is one state that defines mass incarceration, it s louisiana, known for decades as the prison capital of the world. if there is one state that defines his incarceration, it s louisiana. known for decades as the prison capitol of the world. 2019, the state s governor john bell edwards said tough on crime approach had not been working. let s talk about mass incarceration. i suppose there was a time it was a good thing. i don t know it was ever a good thing but we know now it was counterproductive. we had the highest incarceration rate in the nation for the last couple of decades but our crime rate was not better for it and recidivism was not better. we were not safer. it was costing a $700 million a year just in louisiana. that s third only to education and health care so we could not afford it. in 2017, edwards, democrat in the deep south signed bipartisan criminal justice reform legislation. the most ambitious in the state s history. you reduced your prison population. we have but we are number 2 at prison. it s a process. to see this happen in a deep red state. law and order south is pretty stunning. it s counterintuitive that you can over incarcerate and be less safe because of it. the reforms are projected to reduce department of corrections spending by more than $260 million over the next decade. some of the money will be invested in reentry programs for those coming home. an important investment because every week an average of 12,000 permanent prisoners in america release back to society. 95% of inmates will get out. when you do next to nothing for successful reentry, you are creating a future that is more riddled with crime. louisiana s reforms focus on nonviolent offenders. what about violent offenders like the juvenile lifer group i are the men dying in hospice. we met people in that person who do not pose a threat to society, but in your opinion, do some people belong in person because what they did was reprehensible? because what they did was reprehensible and there continues to be opposition among the victim s family. whether someone continues to pose a threat to society is a factor to be considered and whether they get released. it cannot be the determinant factor to the of all others. henry montgomery and clifford hampton face opposition from the victim s families. what will happen to them when they see the parole board? montgomery is about to find out. someone has come to support him. his name is andrew. he might look like a lawyer but he is actually the first juvenile lifer to be released because of montgomery s supreme court case. all right. today is the day. he served 19 years in prison. at age 15, he was out with a teenage girl when i got into an argument. he became enraged and peter over the head with a metal rod and try to get rid of her body by burning it. you committed a pretty savage crime. it was a horrible crime and on excusable there s nothing i can do to undo it. they were able to see how i had changed. the parole board said he changed after 19 years, what will it say about henry montgomery after 55 years? you are the first guy who got out and he is still here. there is a lot of guilt. i went to prison when i was 15, a white kid, and got out when i was 34. henry went to prison, a black kid at 17 and he is still here after 55 years. big day. the panel must vote unanimously to free him. they were behind closed doors for more than an hour. this is the audio from that hearing. my vote is to grant parole. my vote is to grant. two yes for his release. then came the third and final vote. for me, unfortunately, mr. montgomery i m going to have to deny your parole. i have a problem i think you need more programs. today your parole has been denied. i caught up with montgomery after he heard the news. he told me he had already packed his bag. you were getting ready in case. in case they said you could go home. yeah. you were holding together. i got life. i will keep my mind on trying to get out. you have to keep hope alive. clifford hampton s hope remains alive. he is about to face the parole board himself. i am realizing he has been in prison longer than i have been alive. i can t wrap my head around that. it was a unanimous vote. parole granted. i was there moments after a surprisingly subdued hampton learned the news. a new adventure begins. yeah. life on the outside. can you imagine what that might be like? excitement. a few days later, he walked free for the first time in 61 years. we will drop your stuff off at your apartment. andrew is here to help him because in 2016, he started a nonprofit called the parole project. by 2020, it had helped more than 40 juvenile lifer s reenter society. his first taste of the outside world, a fast food hamburger with everything on it. first apartment. his temporary apartment painted with bright colors to remind him he is no longer in prison. i am seeing so much that s new to me. i am excited about it all. 2.5 years later, he had the honor of assisting another juvenile lifer in his first moments as a free man. in november 2021, 75-year-old henry montgomery, the man who paved the way to freedom for andrew and hundreds of others was granted parole after serving nearly 58 years behind bars. in all honesty, henry should ve been the first one of us to come home. however, he is home today. you are going to do great. montgomery and clifford hampton left behind thousands of others who will never go home. they are today s filled with only yesterday s. something my neighbor curtis know all too well. this is my son he was killed in a motorcycle crash. in my short time here, i learned a lot about the human ability to cope. to accept. to survive. good night. as i wrote in the journal i kept, it s too easy to look away from prison and prisoners. dignity is earned. hope is essential. i m craig melvin. thank you for watching. that is all for this edition of dateline. i am craig melvin. thank you for watching.

that is all the time we have this weekend. we will see you tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. eastern for more morning joe. until then, enjoy the rest of your sunday. your sunday. good morning. it s sunday, june 9. i m alicia menendez. with michael steele and symone sanders townsend. we are following president biden on his final day in france and the appearance of his message of american leadership for folks abroad and at home. donald trump and his allies will payback was guilty verdict. however deranged that may sound . how congressional republicans want to use their power to punish. what could happen this week as trump pushes to be unleashed from his gag order. grab your coffee and settle in. welcome to the weekend. president biden is wrapping up his consequential visit to europe this morning in the next hour, he is expected to visit american military cemetery near paris. this caps a week of ceremonies commemorating the 80th anniversary of the allied invasion of normandy. the president used the stage to call for citizens to demand of accuracy cash against authoritarianism worldwide. we stand at an inflection point in history. the decisions we make now will determine the course of our future for decades to come. we have a lot of opportunity and a lot of responsibility. it gives me hope to know the france and the united states stand together now and always. me we continue to see democracy, may we in both languages, no we stand together. joining us is professor of history and author of strongmen , miscellany to the present, ruth ben-ghiat. presidential historian professor of history douglas brinkley. good morning. ruth, i want to start with you. i thought this week was incredibly important. a definition all week if you will. both on the global stage and here at home for president biden. he really connected a number of dots about the urgency and the washington post wrote a piece which i thought he talked will americans recognize their country in the dark and desperate portrait trump painted? or is the country s falling to pieces, he said. if he is not return to power, the countries finish. you want to be country anymore. or will americans instead choose to see a nation still striving to fulfill the higher purpose than biden described in memory of those who fought here, died here, literally save the world here, let us be worthy of their sacrifice. that, to me, was a consummating moment. i would love to get your take on how the president has framed his visit around this idea of, there is a bigger fight out there. those who come before have engaged in it and now it s up to us to engage as well on behalf of democracy. i think it s been extremely effective to frame this not only because the reason he is there is commemorating an important victory over fascism in world war ii, but it reminds us of the toll that bad leadership can have. not just on one s own country but on the world. when you have district to vengeful leaders with large armies, as you did with mussolini, hitler, and today with putin, he see the world is not safer. trump is trying to his tell us that the world may be safer because he is allied with people like putin but that s not the case and history is clear on that. i want to agree with michael that this week was in his word definition. when we were listening to president biden brought that he was expressing the urgency of this moment that we find ourselves in but with an i toward history. they were flourishes where he would say, how will we be remembered? how will this moment be remembered in 10, 20, 30 years. do you agree that this week was definitional and when scholars of history look back , how will this be remembered? on the short-term, it was a big win for joe biden. he went dess the famous spot where ronald reagan gave one of his famous speeches, and pulled up a very important speech, warning us about the need for democracy and the need to fight for freedom. reminding us that authoritarianism is on the loose yet again. really going after, going after people that are xena phobic, right-wing populist movement blooming in europe right now. i did come across as representing america as a statesman and promoting nato and protecting the ukraine and trying to create a stronger bulwark against putin s russia who is on a terror right now. to follow up on that point. i believe it was cass mood who wrote populism is a thick ideology mixed with faith and ideology. this right-wing populism on the rise in europe, populism doesn t have to be bad, but like bernie sanders is an economic populist. this idea that this dirty populism is the thing that s taking hold of places not just across europe but a sentiment like that at home. how does that dovetail with what we know to be true about our history? you see the republican party of today going back to the 1930s and embracing an isolationist plank. they are the henry ford s and charles lindbergh s of today. this is a fringe movement but isolationism over the decades has had its adherence. what is worrying about it is this friendship that trump has maintained with putin. he acts like he is putin s puppet is hillary clinton famously put it. he asked that way and with any authoritarian leader, if you chisel away at what donald trump is arguing, he sees a world of five big powers with five important authoritarian/in his case, democratic leader. we don t do business that way in the united states. trump is standing out as a loan silo because all the other presidents, ronald reagan was in the news because the spot biden chose to give his commemorative speech. reagan s is part of the other presidents club. ronald reagan but want to make sure we defended ukraine. that speech reagan gave in 1984 was about liberating eastern europe, getting the berlin wall to come down and breaking up the soviet union. american democracy on offensive posture and trump s an agent of fear. he is fear mongering the way he away long dated her father conklin. joe mccarthy famously. what is different is we had those tenets before of fear mongering but they never went all the way to somebody being able to take over the party of abraham blinken and also, with the specter of january 6 has happened in this millions of americans seem to shrug off january 6 is not a big deal, to me it s frightening. it tells you how deeply rooted social media has made right- wing extremism a disease across our land right now. give then everything we know and certainly that we have learned from history and historians like douglas, how did we get here? how do people move themselves into this space? the reason i ask, i am going to play the new ad from the biden campaign which lays out some of the more infamous quotes of donald trump and military service for example. he handed me his purple heart. i always wanted to get the purple heart. this was much easier. does donald trump even understand why someone is given a purple heart? why you receive the purple heart in the first place? here we are in this moment where people are looking past the man s attack on the military. his attack on institutions. his attack on the constitution. what to use senses going on that s animating this and allowing it to continue the way it has? i am glad the biden campaign made that at. it s very moving because it speaks to dess it gets to the heart of the fact that authoritarians are nihilist. they have no ideals beyond money and power. anybody who would do something like serve their country knowing they may be injured or killed, that makes them losers and dupes which are the suckers which are the words donald trump uses about our own people who serve. he mocks people who serve such as nikki haley s husband. in keeping with authoritarians throughout history because they despise the people think, quote, govern. they only want to dominate them, exploit them. this is why i go back to character and leadership and having somebody like donald trump lead our country, we deserve better. it s an incredible moment, douglas, to be living in, and i think about president biden on the world stage yesterday we were on air and prepared to talk about his trip to europe. in the interim, there was the hostage rescue out of gaza. i want you to listen to what the president had to say. i want to echo president macron s comments welcoming the hostages return to their families in israel. we won t stop working until all hostages come home and a cease- fire is reached. that is essential to happen. so often when i see these moments in the world s stage i m reminded of the argument that president biden made when he was running for president four years ago which is, we need someone from day one is ready to hit the ground running who understands challenges at home and challenges abroad. he really foreshadowed the years that would come in terms of the marriott crises they have developed in real time. when i was watching president biden these last few days, i m reminded of his greatness. often, we dismiss something that he says he seems to be an opportunity. there is this steady evenness, even low-key on this which may not make him kinetic on the campaign trail but it makes you feel saying that he is a states person. that he understands protocol. that he understands how important the u.s./french relationship is. he can talk about lafayette with president mccrone and understand the hours story the american revolution of two today with france. he has been there. he has done that. he has seen a lot. he was visibly moved at normandy when he went to the forest of crosses and stars of david and walked across. you can feel how emotional this was. biden had been born in world war ii, 1941, probably our last president that would be a world war ii president. he reminded us of the power of nato. this has been the essential alliance since 1945, 48 with harry truman, all the way up to now and there s only been one anti-nato president and that s donald trump. nato, the atlantic alliance is seminal for keeping our military , economic policies, and democracy, and culture even alive and well. i ve been deeply disturbed the weight trump pushed aside nato might as well just blow away the european union. it s refreshing to watch biden and know he has that long institutional memory and understands what containment of soviet expansion means back in the days. especially given everything that s going on. i will ask you to stick with us because we need to talk about the rest of the far right. it s not just in america. new details about the role american intelligence played in the israeli mission that rescued four hostages. rescued . auntie, you can t put that right in the dishwasher. watch me. with cascade platinum plus i have upped my dish game. i just scrape. load. and i m done. in that dishwasher? help people understand the importance of not leaning into this and this does not end well for anybody. we are lucky that southern poverty law center in alabama is continuing to monitor these hate crimes. that bit of luck turns to horror when we start watching the spikes in anti- semitism, spikes and anti- mexican rhetoric, and type black, anti-lgbtq+. the right wants to destroy the fabric of a multicultural america. as we are speaking in san diego, catholic charities, i am a check let a catholic. one of my favorite people is pope francis by catholic charity workers are being attacked and disrupted by handing out food and water to children that have come over the border in southern california. we are looking at authoritarian coming our way. when have we seen this before? we haven t. black america has. black america has had lynchings. we have things like the springfield race riot of 1908 or the race riot of 1921. we have had the institutionalization of jim crow and saw what did in decimating black americans. we have seen what this can do to indigenous people where their rights are stripped away and they are seen as something other. there is a real white supremacy movement alive across the land led by donald trump. at their core, the were fearful of this browning of america and this is seen as the last big stan to reclaim america as a white predominately white country. that anti-immigrant, anti- person of color rhetoric that is coming out of this right is ghastly. it represents the ugly part of our country. trump used to praise fdr for one thing, all the great things franklin d roosevelt, but the one trump talks about, was in a gray 20 put japanese in internment camps in world war ii? he would praise eisenhower, ike did many good things, two terms, but trump praises operation with back, bringing workers, agricultural workers and shipping them out of the united states back to mexico. this is the kind of movement we are dealing with. it is frightening. we have not seen something like this coalesce since the confederate movement before the civil war. it had spirits, mccarthyism was a big deal but fellow republican dwight eisenhower along with the u.s. army were able to chop mccarthy off at the knees. there is nobody out there to stop or slow donald trump down and it s going to be up to joe biden and kamala harris to talk about optimism and the economy and talk about better days are here to come. talk about the virtues of democracy and don t result of fear mongering that trump is doing to mobilize his base and beyond. ruth, we will give you the last word, but i m thinking the fact that the european parliament elections are enfolding this week, and we talked the radical right is on the rise in the juxtaposition between was happening at home and across europe and political wrote this week that the radical right arrival in the european stage will have a lasting impact. allegiance sees allegiances formed in early adulthood tend to last lifetimes unlike in the u.s. were support for trump is concentrated among the elderly. the insurgents have captured the youth vote in europe, likely lacking and support for decades. nowhere is it more clear that in the national rally party as it relates to what s happening in france. a 28-year-old later. what say you about this rise of the radical right, this dirty populism amongst young people? it s a big problem. far right authoritarians have been very savvy about using tribalism and using emotion. symone, i want to and on an optimistic note because it s too easy wherever we are living to think there is this wave and it will submerge us and it is hopeless. we should not resist. in poland, they successfully voted out, they immobilized the biggest rally and voter turnout since 1989 and they got rid of their far right government. in hungary, there s huge protests, the gop ideal right now, and we saw in india voters dealt him a defeat. it does not have to go this way. it doesn t have to be this way. ruth ben-ghiat and douglas brinkley, thank you. we will go to tel aviv as we learn more about the fallout from an israeli military mission in gaza that rescue four hostages. stick with his. you are watching the weekend. reporter: even as israel is celebrating the success of yesterday s hostage rescue, they are bracing for a significant political development in a couple of hours time. 1:00 p.m. eastern we are expecting benny gantz, the centrist opposition leader who joins benjamin netanyahu s wartime government to hold a press conference and we believe he will announce that he is resigning from netanyahu s government. let s be clear, assuming that s what happens, what that does and does not mean. it does not mean the fall of netanyahu s government but it would mean that the far right inside of that government, the same far right that is deeply opposed to the cease-fire plan laid out by prime minister by president biden rather last week would be empowered. you would not have that centrist more moderate element inside of the government to counterbalance the power of the far right. that is potentially a significant move. we were expecting benny gantz to hold this press conference yesterday, but he delayed it in light of the hostage rescue. going back to the four hostages. all are in good condition according to the israeli military. they spent their first night being treated at a hospital here in the greater tel aviv area. we had a chance yesterday to catch up with some of the friends of noa argamani, the young woman who was kidnapped on october 7 from the music festival, taken on a motorcycle into gaza. the friends of hers who we have been speaking to for eight months have just seen her for the first time. take a listen. how are you feeling? let s take a step back. on day one of this administration, joe biden brought forth a comprehensive immigration plan republicans have failed. they used the border as a talking point and refuse to work with those. even despite that, joe biden was able to negotiate a bipartisan border plan that would ve provided long-overdue resources to help secure the border, provide more resources for immigration courts, help expedite green cards for a lot of people that need more pathways to citizenship and what happened? donald trump killed it not once but twice. we are in this position where we were forced to take executive action that helps address what we can and cannot do with very limited resources and we have to be honest about that. that does not mean the fight for comprehensive immigration reform is over. you heard biden talk about it earlier that the fight is far from over but we have to be honest. the american people demand action when it comes to a broken immigration system. overwhelming americans support the action and comprehensive immigration reform and we have to remind voters that we have to work for the. i want to as quickly as a follow-up. a lot of reporting about the possibility of the administration considering ways in which they could address challenges in immigration on the interior including parole in place of american citizens. is this something we could see as soon as this coming week? i can t get ahead of policy announcement but you heard the president earlier, the fight for comprehensive immigration reform, dressier pathways to citizenship, especially for people who have been here a long time is critical. the american people do not like chaos. they don t want chaos at the border or in their communities. we have to continue that fight and we have to remind the american people of what donald trump is running. he wants to round up latinos and immigrants across the country. max detention camps. we have to do both. and the time we have left, a lot of times when folks talk about engaging we talk about the need for the biden campaign to engage republicans because as part of his coalition. moderate republican voters and independents. we talk about the need to gin up the base as well and treat base voters, young people, women, black and latino voters, what is the message when it comes to the economy for black and latino voters, young people . when i am talking to people, one of the chief concerns as economic. housing. the rent is too high all over. gut bless you if you want to buy a house and you were not rich. which your message to folks, here which is a about the border, trump scene phobic. what about the economy? we have to tell a story to the american people about who is fighting for them and fighting to make their lives better. it s not just the economy who is taking action to address corporate greed? action to address junk fees? joy after they were rescued from hamas captivity by idf forces in a special operations saturday morning, the rate of two separate apartments and a central gaza refugee camp took months of preparation and military spokesman said, since hamas moves, hostages frequently and embeds them in areas packed with civilians like this refugee camp. following reports of heavy shelling and artillery fire, gaza hospital said more than 200 people were killed in the operation. cnn has not been able to verify claims about the exact number of civilian deaths in what was the first successful hostage rescue since february here with me now from paris where he is traveling with president biden is national security adviser, jake sullivan. thank you so much for being with me. let s start of course, with the news about the rescue of four israeli hostages inside gaza. how specifically did the us assist in the mission well, dana, the united states has been providing support to israel for several months in its efforts to help identify the locations of hostages in gaza and to support efforts to try to secure their rescue or recovery. i m not going to get into the specific operational or intelligence related matters associated. and with that, because we need to protect those, i can only just say that we have generally provided support to the idf so that we can try to get all of the hostages home, including the american hostages who are still being held so i understand that intelligence u.s. intelligence assisted but what you say anything about u.s. personnel, us weapons? well, the one thing i can say is that there were no us forces, no, no us boots on the ground involved in this operation. we did not participate militarily in this operation jake a mosque claims that other hostages that they are holding inside gaza were killed as a result of the idf s mission, is that true? we have not seen that verified or were confirmed. i believe that the israelis have said they do not have any information to that effect. but of course, that is always a risk with all of these military operations, hostages have been killed over the last eight months. and so dana the best way to get all of the hostages home and to protect palestinian civilians is to end this war. and the best way to end in this war is for hamas to say yes to the deal president biden announced and that israel has accepted, which lays out a roadmap to an enduring ceasefire in the return of all hostages because that s what we re driving for, and that s what we re asking the world to call upon hamas to accept are you concerned at all given what you just said that the ball is in hamas s court right now that the rescue that happened on saturday we ll make it so that hamas might walk away from the negotiating table its a legitimate question. i it s hard for me to put myself in the mindset of a hamas terrorists. we don t know exactly what it is that they re going to do. but the basic bottom line here is straightforward to bring it into this war, to get the hostages tom, to get the full scope of humanitarian aid to the palestinian people in a safe and effective way, we need the steel and all of the people all over the world and the united states. and in countries everywhere who have been calling for a ceasefire, they need to train their attention on hamas and put the pressure on because this is the way to resolve this issue. and whatever the calculus is of hamas coming out of this weekend, the reality remains the same. this is the only credible path forward and hamas i should say, yes any word either from hamas or through hamas is intermediaries about their stance vis-a-vis the ceasefire deal that the president endorsed. a little bit more than a week ago. since what happened yesterday well, we ve heard a lot publicly from hamas over the last week. we ve not seen any official statements since what happened with the hostage rescue operation. and the two key error of mediators who are standing alongside the united states in this process, qatar and egypt have not yet received any official word from hamas representatives as to their stance on the deal so we are waiting that word and it should come today. it should come this, our hamas should say yet which would immediately put in place a ceasefire and immediately begin the process of bringing hostages home. this is the answer that the world is looking for. it s time to act jake, i want to ask you a little bit more about that mission. and one of the questions is what we re hearing from gaza different hospitals in gaza say at least 236 people were killed as a part of the israeli operation to rescue hostages what is your understanding of how many palestinian civilians not militants, but civilians were killed in that rescue mission we ve united states are not in a position today to make a definitive statement about that, the israeli defense forces have put out one number for the hamas-run gaza health ministry has pulled out another number, but we do know this dana innocent people were tragically killed in this operation. the exact number we don t know, but innocent people were killed and that is heartbreaking. that is tragic. the president himself has said in recent days that the palestinian people are going through sheer hell in this conflict, because hamas is operating in a way that puts them in the cross-fire that holds hostages right in the heart of crowded civilian areas that puts military and placement that s right in the heart of crowded civilian areas. but every day that we see more innocent people lost is another horrible, awful tragic de and our hearts in the united states and across the world, break for that, but there is only one answer to stop that from happening going forward that is a he s fire and hostage deal that ends the military operations brings the hostages home and puts us in a position to give the palestinians and opportunity for for a better future for their people and last just about the mission we re you don t want to specifically say how the u.s. was it s involved, which i understand. but just broadly, big picture no one can deny the amazing news of seeing these innocent civilians who were finally brought back to their families from gaza after being held there for eight months. but is the us comfortable with the way that the israelis carried out the mission? looked in a why is president biden going out publicly and calling for a ceasefire and hostage deal? it s because he thinks the best sway to get all of the hostages home is in a deal where they re brought out diplomatically, where there s no need for military operations to get every last hostage out. so that would obviously be the best solution to this in the absence of that without hamas saying yes to the deal, unfortunately, we are going to continue to see ongoing conflict and military operations in which israel makes efforts to recover its citizens. and frankly to recover american citizens. what we would much prefer to see is a ceasefire where the hostages come out peacefully. that is available. israel has said yes to it. now hamas needs to say yes to it. that s where president biden s full effort, energy and attention is. and you heard yesterday from the french president here in paris that france stands behind that the world stands behind that, and hamas should come to the table and say, yeah you mentioned that you are in paris. i have to before i let you go ask about the trip that you and of course the president is making to europe, marking the 80th, then first ray of d-day. you are soon going to be part of the g7 in italy. and the president gave a very big speech on democracy as he s trying to frame the 2024 president presidential election here against donald trump as a discussion about the fate of bankruptcy, do you think democracy is in jeopardy? the president said in his speech that democracy, democracy is at risk all over the world from without and from within. to a greater extent now than it has been in a very long time. and what president biden was arguing is that those brave men who stormed the beaches at normandy who scaled the cliffs at pointe to hakh, who liberated europe and literally saved the world. they are calling us to step up to do our job in our time, which is two ben democracy, to stand with allies, to refuse to bow down to dictators to push back against aggression that s what president biden is seeking to do. adapt that s the message that he gave here today. and it s something he will carry forward as long as he is president. he said around the world, is democracy at risk? in the united states as part of this election what we do hear voices calling playing into question the basic democratic values and democratic institutions that have made our country great for 250 years. and those voices have gotten louder in recent years. and that is a source of deep concern. but it s also a source of huge governors on both parties about the state of the race. here with me now from wisconsin, where is she is campaigning for donald trump? is south dakota republican governor kristi noem. thank you so much for being here, governor. i want to start with what we ve heard a lot of from the former president since he was found guilty in his new york hush money trial. that is repeatedly suggesting that he would prosecute his political opponents if he is elected with part of what he said it s a terrible precedent for our country. does that mean the next president does it to them? that s really the question. and it s very possible that it s going to have to happen to them based on what they ve done. i would have every right to go after them. revenge, just take time we will say that he does. and sometimes revenge can be justified governor, is that the message you think donald trump should be focusing on in this campaign right now? well, his message has clearly been that his only vengeance will be america s success. he is not interested in going after political opponents. he is interested in going back to the white house and working for the american people and their families, bringing down inflation costs and that s what i m hearing overwhelmingly here in wisconsin. is that this swing state is so important and these people here, they re number one issue right now, is not that sham trial and not the verdict and the convictions and not what s going on as far as what a lot of people are talking about in the media, they care about what s happening to their families, how much grocery prices this is have gone up, how much better their lives were four years ago. so that that s, that s really their number one concern yeah. i mean, it seems clear what you re hearing from voters that that is what their concern is. but it is what we heard from donald trump this week over and over and interview after interview, that he is considering going for his political opponents. so should he stopped doing that, given what you just said, you re hearing from voters what he said is that he s warned the american people if we start weaponizing the judicial system like they did against him, that it could happen to any president. it could happen to any political opponent. what he s talking about when he s having in those discussions, is that be careful what you do because that opens the door in the future to anybody doing it. and that s what he s trying to shut down. he wants people to trust or judicial system. he wants to make sure that we still have law and order in this country. if you look at conservative areas of this country, places where republicans were in control, we have law and order we have peace stability. you go to democrat states and cities that s where you see destruction and you see judicial systems and trials and corrupt judges that prosecute their political enemies. that s what new york was. new york, that was definitely a rigged elections are rigged judicial process against the president. politically motivated well, he was found guilty based on a jury, 12 members of the 12 piers, 12 piers of his. the other thing i just want to mention and i do want to move on is that right now? the justice department is prosecuting the president s son. president biden, son is prosecuting a house democrat is prosecuting a senate democrat so doesn t that fly in the face of the claim that the whole judicial system has weaponized against republicans i don t think anybody believes the whole, the whole judicial system is. i think they see places in this country where it is. and a new york was certainly one of those. and i don t know dana, if you read that letter from the judge in the new york city trial that came out that talked about the fact that some of these social media posts that came out before the decision in the verdicts even came out from that jury. so there may be a mistrial coming here because it was handled so poorly by this judge, and that s what i think that will be eye-opening to the american people as they really, truly will have proof then that that judge was corrupted. now, he should have recused himself according to the ethics and rules of new york. he should never have presided over that whole process. and president trump should have never been in that section. i just want to say that those details have not been confirmed. obviously, the trial is over. so i think you re probably referring to an appeal. i want to move on to some of the politics that we re seeing in the 2024 race specifically donald trump is actively starting to look for running mate cnn is told that there are seven potential trump vp contenders receiving vetting materials so far you re not on that list. do you have any indication that you re still under consideration to be donald trump s running mate i ve told president trump over and over again, he needs to pick whoever helps him when i have been loyal to him since the very beginning when he first started to run in 2016. he s told me his priority is picking a running mate that can govern on day one. it has been the loyalty him that can has experienced and run businesses, knows how to be a ceo, but also supports him and his policies. i don t care. i love my job in south dakota. i care about the fact that i want him to win and he knows that i will do that. so i talked to him three times yesterday. i think he s doing great and fantastic. i m proud of him i ve never seen anybody get out a bed and work as hard as this guy does just because he loves america and he s got some, a lot of corrupt criminals and a lot of political enemies coming after him and he still gets up, fights for the average everyday american that makes me proud of him on that list that i just showed so there were six men and one woman women, particularly suburban women. i don t need to tell you, could play a big role in who gets elected in november should there be a woman on the ticket a and b, you said you just need to pick somebody who will help him win would do help him win we ll all the all the pools such tell him in the swing states that a woman on the ticket, it helps him when the polls just say that people, one in four republican women haven t made up their minds because they want to have a woman talking to them about the issues they care about and women aren t monolithic. they don t, they don t care about just one issue. they care about health care, they care about their children, they care about their futures, they care about having an opportunity to have a business and to have a career. and all of that is being threatened. vendor joe biden but but yes, the women vote is extremely important and i spent the majority of my time here in wisconsin talking to women and talking to those people that are independent and on the fringe and they re leaning towards donald trump. but they also want to know that their perspective is gonna be at the table when decisions you should pick a woman. they want to know that there s going to be people involved i think that that would be a beneficial is according to the polling that i ve seen for him in a lot of swing states is that having a woman that is helping him campaign makes a difference. so it s an i could be home and bed or feeding my horses right now. are racking my grand babies, but i m in wisconsin because i believe president trump needs to win his policies are right for america and they re perfect for south dakota. and i want him to win and the polling tells me that he needs women out on the campaign trail curing his message about how much he cares it s about them and their future. two, let me ask you about a topic that is important to women will actually important to a lot of people. and that is contraception senate republicans is we ve blocked and bill to protect access to contraception nationwide. as a matter of principle, do you think republican should support company? fleet access to birth control yes, i do. i think that bill was a joke that bill was far-reaching in everything that was included and it wasn t just a single issue bill, which in my book i talk about the fact that single issue bills actually would fix a lot of what s broken in this country. but absolutely contrast section is something that should be available to women. why can t we just start talking about the fact that a lot of women, when they re in their situations, they re in a crisis situation. why don t we support them and give them information? and help them? so i think that whatever we re talking about when it comes to women s health care, that that s something that we as everybody in this america in this america public needs to realize is that these are difficult situations and we need to love people and win their hearts and minds as well as talk about policy. you mentioned your book. so i m going to ask you about that because in that book no, going back, you came under pretty intense criticism even from some members of your own party because you shared a story about shooting and killing your 14 year 14 month old dog, cricket. now that you ve had time to process all of that and all candor, do you have regrets you know that story s a 20-year-old story of a mom who made a very difficult decision to protect her children from a vicious animal that was attacking livestock and killing livestock and attacking people. so it s in the book because it was difficult for me and there s a lot in that book that i think people will need to read. i don t know if you ve read it or not. i read the whole thing, but it wouldn t be in the book if it wasn t a very hard situate. all good. well, i m glad you did. thank you for doing that, but but there s a lot in that book that s very important and i hope people read it because it s a how to guide for the average citizen on how to get their government back. yeah, why i believe that we need to have president trump back in the white house. yeah, i did the whole thing. and so i have the entire context of that incident. good. and so what i m hearing is no regrets, not just about writing about it, but we ve actually shooting the dog we ve covered this and i m a mom and protected my children from a vicious animal. we just had a nine-year-old boy and south dakota killed just days ago from a dog. that happens and i ve that nine-year-old boy will never be in his parents lives again. i ll never been his family s lives again. i think it s people are put in tough situations in life and we learned from it. and we learn a lot for what did you learn. and that s what i ve talked a lot in that book, dana, i ve learned that challenging times and hard decisions are hard. and that when you get into public office, you d learn from every single one of them and you use that knowledge to go forward into and to make wise decisions that are best for america. that s why joe biden s such a train wreck. the guys 80-years-old and making the worst decisions i ve ever seen him making his entire life and destroying or country, not just on the foreign policy stage by what he s doing in the middle east. and, but also what he s doing on our economy and he s putting every other country in our enemies in front of america. and i think that s just horrible right now. you realize dana that what he did last week is that when the trump verdict came out in his trial, he actually joe biden held a press conference announcing a deal between israel and a terrorist organization that was not agreed to. and he did it during shabbat i mean, how disrespectful to the jewish people. well, to hold a press conference that they can t even respond to if for regulation just residents. i just believed that we ve got people that we ve got people that really we need to recognize how week this president is. and you were talking about hostages earlier in your show as jimmy carter, who i ran held hostages for a 444 days under jimmy carter. carter because he was week back in 1979 and 1980. and the day ronald reagan was inaugurated, they were released because they recognize their ronald reagan would be a strong president we ve got the exact same situation here in america. why are we not? they re getting are americans home why are we not telling hamas, give us are americans back? why, why are we not doing russia to give us our journalists bad? yeah, i think one thing that this president should be doing is protecting americans. yeah, go get our americans and bring them home. that s what, that s what i m upset about. yeah. i think there s measures that will be on the ballot in november. now this week you re in washington democrats tried to lean into that topic with a push to and try and contraception rights nationwide. here with me now to talk about that and more, is michigan governor gretchen whitmer. thank you so much for being here you just heard governor known your colleague from south dakota talk about contraception. she says republicans are not trying to take away access to birth control. democrats are making this political, what s your response? i think that we all know the truth here. there s no question that with the three appointments that donald trump put onto our united states supreme court, three people who lied to congress, betrayed their oath of office and put forward? the dobbs decision. we know that there are women in many states who cannot access fundamental health care cannot make their own decisions about whether and when to bear a child. we know that mifepristone is under attack, that ivf surrogacy and now contraception is as well. and when the usf and it puts forth policy to ensure that they have an opportunity to enshrine access to contraception. and republicans vote against it and kill that bill. it is very much at risk here in this moment. and i think that what we re seeing out of the republicans saying that they protect, want to protect this as disingenuous at best and an outright lie at worst i want to talk a little bit about what we heard from the vice president kamala harris, who was speaking in your state last night? in detroit, and she said, quote, donald trump thinks he is above the law and this should be disqualifying for anyone who wants to be president of the united states what do you think well, you know what? i think that the fact of the matter is, we know under this democracy, no one is above the law. everyone is held into account. we have a system of jurisprudence that we have to have confidence. and then when you take that oath of office, we expect our leaders to live up to up to that oath. then this former president is now a convicted felon. he is the standard bearer unfortunately for the republican party in this moment this is a high-stakes election where you ve got someone who flouts the law and cheats and just got caught and someone who has four over the course of his lifetime made serving the public. the only thing that he is focused on, he has delivered for the american people and we ve got a stark decision in front of us and i really think that people need to take this moment very seriously and get out and vote because this is high stakes i want to turn to a different, very different trial, and that is one that is going on in delaware with the president s son, hunter biden he is on trial for obtaining and possession of firearm while under the influence of illegal drugs, which was against the law. a republican, lindsey graham, says that an average american would not have been prosecuted either. yes, governor can hear yesterday, my panel is here, nice to see you all. so you have her clearly leaning into using the verdict as a political weapon and then you have donald trump leaning into the verdicts and using them as a political weapon, obviously in a very different way for retribution. bryan lanza, i m going to start with you since you re the only one at this table who has worked for donald trump? i know it s probably hard to stop him from doing that, which should he yells. i think the presence is going to do what he wants to do at the end of the de and i think the thing is is the focus for him and the rest of the campaign is going to be focusing on the economy and focus on the issues that matter. when i see an ad, like when i see her comma comma comma talking about, i almost want her talking more because the public has such an adverse reaction to the things she says. now, talking about genes, the only one feeling cheated here is probably the american public. they were promised something three-and-a-half years ago, a strong economy, a safe world if two wars overseas, we have a third one about to start between the philippines and china, which the us has military agreements with. and we have inflation wiping out the middle-class, wiping out savings, wiping up people s credits i think the public feel cheated. so you have to be careful with the word she uses. congressman khanna. well, the president is that a very strong record of bringing manufacturing back, of record job creation, lowest unemployment, but here is the contrast. the president is out there on d-day trying to bring this country together, speaking about our aspiration invoking president reagan saying we have a unifying message and donald trump is on dr. phil talking about retribution. i think that s gonna be the real case of what type of country are we, are we a country that s going to come together with the president s message. are we going to want to tear each other apart? doesn t sound very unifying to me. i mean, kamala harris on the attack this week and candidly, joe biden attacking, i think i ll trump during his overseas speech. normally we re worried about people attacking presidents when they re overseas. we don t normally have to worry about presidents attacking their opponents when they are overseas. i think it underscores the horrible week, the biden people had. wall street journal says he s slipping behind the scenes in a deeply source story, politico says, blows up the popular narrative that the biden joe biden has nothing to do with his family s business dealings. new york times today s out with a piece debunking all the personal narrative myths of joe biden. there s chaos all around the biden campaign, right now. and to top it all off, somehow virginia is now a swing state so i m not surprised see kamala harris desperately on the attack because the campaign is totally flailing right now love listening to you talking about chaos because i remembered donald trump in 2016, warning us that if hillary clinton were president, it would be chaos all the time and guess what? we had four years of chaos with donald trump, but dan out, let s talk, but it s really going on here internally. i m assuming the trump campaign is same one. i m seeing which is this talking about the conviction of donald trump on 34 felony counts is working. we have a cbs poll out just this morning. we have other polls coming out that are showing joe biden starting to come move ahead. and here s the problem for the trump campaign these things matter when they underscore something that people already sent and believe about someone they already sent and believe donald trump lied to them. he had lied to them when he said he didn t sleep with stormy daniels, he lied to them when he said he was going to make all these things better and guess what? his tax cuts help the very wealthy. they harmed the middle-class. and in fact, new york times, i m so glad mentioned new york times has a story out this morning about how so many of the promises that trump is making when he talks about mass deportations, guess what? that s going to increase our costs when he talks about this trade policy, trade tariffs, guess what? that s going to increase our costs, and that s consistent with our oil. hold on. that s consistent with our own reporting. that showed that ryan lins are just sorry, that showed the cost will go up about $1,700 for middle-class americans and all donald trump can do is talk retribution while his people du, the best they can with talking. and i just sort of frame this conversation in an tick of a different way. and that is how this race could change a bet, not a lot, but a bit he hasn t picked his running mate yet, and you just heard kristi noem saying pretty much point blank. he should pick a woman she would like for it to be her. i don t know if it s going to be her. we got the list of the people who have gotten there vetting materials. there s only one woman on that list and that is elise stefanik of new york the woman who pretty much hands down could help him win more than any horse is nikki haley? i don t know if it helped with me. i mean, it s it s listen i want us to you re already getting vote for him. i m a reporters when republican, but i think nikki haley would cause problems for me because he would say the future of the party is not in good hands. and i think that s what people are looking for for the president when he chooses the vp, somebody who continues along with the policies and the priorities are important to him, and nikki haley, just as matches up. so i think that s the challenge are going to have and she hasn t shown a propensity, even moved towards the issues that trump voters care about and what the voters are going to care about in this party. going to care about are more of these? things that president trump s talking about. they re talking about tariffs. we ve me scott s and shock here. i m shocking. we re now the party of tariffs and our party wants more of it. like i ve never predicted that our party is moving and that the reality is as nikki haley is not moving with the party i think the issue is abortion rights and that s why democrats have over-performed. when i was in wisconsin across the state. i mean, there s still an arcane law there that bans abortion when people were talking about is the right to access to reproductive health, the right to access to contraception and the fact that there s only one woman candidate on the running mate for donald trump shows that there s still out-of-touch and that s why women are going to win this election for president biden, i think that s what he s numbers are moving in the cbs poll and that s why i m optimistic that he s going to get reelected i actually heard brian, i think you need a running mate. first of all, the number one thing is do no harm and being a second is you have to have someone who is going to unabashedly support your agenda, like you cannot have somebody out there who is pulling their punches on a daily basis. and so the list that he has outright now are a group of people that have shown time and again, they are willing to step up and defend him and fight for his agenda nikki haley has a lot of positions that i agree with, but but she has a big problem with donald trump. she said at time and again, i m not sure that makes the best running. it s clear donald trump is continues to have trouble with women voters and consolidating suburban women. kamala harris, vegas and an excellent job. prosecuting the case for joe biden. i think they should consider if i don t want to give trump advice, but he might want to consider a woman, although i think the challenge for many women would be how do i defend some of them massage any of this man credibly, i think this is nikki haley s problem while trying to get people to vote for him. all right. we are out of time. we didn t get to the fact that donald
