How a mannequin head could revolutionize the way orchestras and audiences come together

By MICHAEL ANDOR BRODEUR | The Washington Post | Published: March 11, 2021
I look up and behold the ornately ornamented ceiling of Detroit's Orchestra Hall, a place I've never actually been. I look down and my legs have vanished, replaced by a single black pole terminating into a tripod. I look all around and find every other seat in the hall empty, though I'm told that at least 10 of us are in attendance. And onstage in front of me, I see the 19 socially distanced members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra tuning their instruments in complete silence - that is, until I pop in my ear buds.

ABC13 Vault: Ray Charles and Quincy Jones visit Houston Symphony in 1971

His visit was chronicled by ABC13 film cameras, and we found the footage in our ABC13 Vault.
The Grammy award winner was in the Bayou City on Feb. 22, 1971, to perform. He was asked about his decision to play with the classical musicians.
"I like the feeling of it," Charles said. "Plus, I think that it is something that almost anybody can understand. In other words, you wouldn't have to be a music scholar to dig it."
We also spotted another famous face on hand for the performance - legendary music producer Quincy Jones - wearing a very 70s shirt.

Dr. Anne Lundy (TSU)
Growing up in the Settegast area of Houston, Dr. Anne Lundy knew that there was nothing she appreciated and loved more in the world than the art of music.
Lundy has transformed her dreams into reality and made it her duty to give other African American instrumentalists the opportunity to explore and perform music while setting a new standard of what a typical orchestra might look like.
She recalls the adolescent moment when she realized she wanted to grow up and become a conductor of an orchestra.
