City leaders across the country – including Knoxville’s – are having a complicated relationship with their police departments.
During the summer of 2020, Knoxville saw several demonstrations against police brutality sparked by the death in Minneapolis of George Floyd, a Black man, who died after his neck was pinned to the ground for more than nine minutes by a white police officer.
Nationwide, protests – some peaceful, some violent – took place.
Following a peaceful Knoxville protest, Mayor Indya Kincannon said at a June 2, 2020, city council meeting, “From these expressions of anger frustration, sadness and solidarity, one thing is clear, the time for change is now, for the end of racism, and the end of police brutality."

ATLANTA — At least 10 people were shot across Atlanta on Sunday alone, leaving some city leaders frustrated over what they called a rise in gun violence over the past year.
In two separate shootings in southwest Atlanta - one in the Oakland City neighborhood, the other near Georgia State University's stadium - police say six people were injured. Then, at the Gold Room nightclub in Buckhead, another person was shot. At the Blue Flame Lounge in northwest Atlanta, APD said a car stopped and someone fired towards the business, injuring three people.

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta officials are taking a closer look at short-term home renting, with one councilman proposing to ban the practice.
Councilman Howard Shook said residents are concerned about a constant stream of strangers in their neighborhoods and a loss of community.
“More and more you’re seeing the neighbors say, ‘I’m getting tired of living next to somebody where I never know who’s supposed to be there and who isn’t and who’s coming and who’s going,’” he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
But some homeowners say they rely on the money from renting out their properties, particularly during the pandemic.

“It’s ridiculous that now, even during this pandemic, we got more gun violence going on than ever before,” said
Columbus Ward, a longtime activist who lives in Atlanta’s Peoplestown neighborhood. 
“It’s really scary because you don’t know who’s going to be killed or who’s going to be shot or where those shots are coming from,” Ward said. “It’s just everywhere.”
The deadly surge has police and city leaders struggling for solutions, according to the report.

Atlanta experienced an uptick in violent crimes in 2020, now a city councilman wants the CDC to investigate.
ATLANTA - Can the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lend a hand to Atlanta's efforts to stem violent crime?
Councilman Howard Shook said it can. The veteran legislator, who represents Buckhead, said a scientist contacted him and made the suggestion.
Shook on Tuesday introduced a resolution asking his colleagues to allow the agency to take a look.
What can be analyzed? Inside the police department, police commanders attend a meeting weekly where crime is reviewed -- the number of incidents and the locations.

NYC hotel shooting kills 1, wounds 2; believed to be first homicide of 2021


The older victim was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition. 
Police believe there was one shooter, who remained at large later Friday morning. 
The hotel, across from Queens Borough Hall, briefly served as a city-run emergency shelter for homeless families after its initial opening, The Queens Chronicle reported.
"They should shut it down," area resident Richard Rogers, 52, told the Post. "There is too much going on there. There have been shootings,  domestic fights….. And, the court is across the street!"
"If they don’t shut it down, it’s going to continue to cause serious problems for the neighborhood," he added. "Being I’ve heard of other incidents there, I’m not surprised this happened. It was just a matter of time before someone got killed. This person barely lived to see 2021."

Horrifically, she’d been struck by a bullet in the back of the head.

The last time the city’s homicide count was this high was in 1998, when the department investigated 154 deaths, records show. The Atlanta Police Department investigated 99 homicides in all of 2019.
“I am deeply concerned about the spike that we are seeing in our homicides,” Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms recently told the AJC, “not just our homicides, but also with our aggravated assaults.”
Following the little girl’s death, conflicts between Bottoms and members of the city council started to spill out in the open. Councilman Howard Shook was sharply critical in a statement on December 22nd:
“To the administration, I don’t want to hear the word ‘uptick. Stop minimizing our concerns by telling us that ‘crime is up everywhere.’ Spare us from the lie that the steady outflow of our officers isn’t as bad as it is. And please, not another throw-away press conference utterly devoid of game-changing action steps. It will take a lot to turn this around. But here, in descending order, are the three things we need to begin: 1). Leadership; 2). Some leadership; 3). Any leadership.”

The US has seen some serious polarization over the question of defunding the police and dismantling police departments in a number of big cities in the wake of the killing of George Floyd earlier this year in Minneapolis. The debate saw Right and Left forces engaging in debates and the Democratic Party particularly saw itself divided over the effectiveness of the idea of defunding the police.
But before the controversy died down, the city of Atlanta has seen a fresh development as its city council proposed a plan worth $1.6 million to set up a police force in one of the wealthiest suburbs just days after a seven-year-old girl was fatally shot.
