keep the government from defaulting. early this afternoon bulletins went out via the new york times and the wall street journal that president obama and house speaker john boehner were close to an agreement on debt reduction on a deal there, but the white house is shooting those stories down. listen up. the breaking news report that you all probably received is incorrect. there is no deal. we are not close to a deal. the fact is that there is no progress to report, but we continue to work on getting the most significant deficit reduction package possible. you can see that is a flat-out denial from the white house, but keep in mind we had two major news operations reporting pretty much the same thing this a deal was in reach. let s go to kate balduan joining us live from capitol hill. kate, what are your sources saying up there about this? reporter: a couple of things on this. you heard there from the president s spokesman jay carney. we ve, of course, been ask ....

storm. our meteorologist jen delgado joins us from the cnn weather center. jen, how is it looking now? we still have watches and warnings across parts of the midwest. of course, we talked about the stormed that happened earlier in the week but according to the national weather service it looks like based on doppler imagery we look like a possible tornado touched down in arkansas. anywhere we re seeing in red we still have a tornado watch in effect. that s for parts of arkansas and missouri. if i take you over to this, we have a report that one person died. it s a rural town, but based on the imagery, the national weather service has told cnn it looks like this area may have suffered widespread damage, the tornado roughly one mile wide is what they re reporting. of course, we have to wait until tomorrow before the national weather service goes back out and surveys the damage to find out whether or not it was a tornado that touched down. i ll tell you this. it looks lik ....

buildings sustaining significant damage. that includes one of the city s main hospitals. the national guard on patrol with a state of emergency in effect. andres cue teams they keep searching today, this afternoon, all through the day for survivors. joplin, missouri, the latest victim of a volatile wave of turbulent springtime weather. brian todd in the thick of it. reporter: drew, rescue teams are combing through grid by grid, house by house in this city. the houses that are left are severely damaged, but frankly in this part of the city not many houses are left. you mentioned about 1/3 of the houses in this downtown area were severely damaged. by that you can take to mean flattened. behind me you can see the wreckage of some of them that is left. now the weather is complicating things as these teams go through the grids of this city on foot mostly and pick through this. the lightning has been rolling in. thunder, rain, all day long. it has made their job, much, much ....

2,000 people in st. landry parish west of baton rouge have been told to pack up and leave. they have until 6:00 p.m. eastern time. six other parishes in the region are also expected to flood. the evacuations come after the army corps of engineers started opening flood gates on the morganza spillway. more will likely be opened in the days ahead. they re merging spillways away from new orleans and baton rouge, but that puts nearly 4,000 people in the path of that flood. we re joined from st. landry parish where people have gotten the word. they re packing up as fast as they can. ed set up the scene for us. reporter: we re in a little stretch of community in a man-made lake called red mile lake, and they ve been told they need to evacuate by this afternoon, so we ve encountered lots of people packing up to leave their homes. authorities have been going door to door with the national guard, local sheriff s deputies, that kind of thing, urging people to pack up. you see mo ....
