Given the recent outcry and horrific acts at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in heartland and those that survived this choosing, and that our keynote speaker has deep ties to florida, i think todays discussion takes on a whole different meaning. Now perhaps more than ever, our government and its leaders must prove they are not only listening to our nations young people, but they are doing everything in their power to ensure all students feel protected and valued in the eyes of ou

Perhaps more importantly america s Civic Engagement is at an alltime low. Public trust in government remains near historic lows, particularly with our nations young people. Less than half of millennials are voting and only 18 of the public trusts leaders in washington to do the right thing. This creates a vicious cycle Many Americans are dissatisfied with their government, yet, still fail to vote because they believe their voices will not be heard. The good news, is that across the country we can find inspiring activists, policymakers, educators, and others who are turning apathy into action. I have been running that for a couple of years. When there a time were no jobs in Information Security for any of us. The only people doing security were maybe people in the military and banks. So this is really a hobby. As the internet grew and there are puttingd people things online and there is money at risk, all of a sudden hackers , started getting jobs doing security. I kept getting emails of people telling me give me an , announcement to def con to make it sound professional. I have to convince my boss to send me to def con for my job. I was rewriting our announcements to make them sound corporate and more professional. One of my friends said you know what, throw a real conference. Charge real money. Make it a professional conference. I thought it was brilliant. But i did not have the money at the time i was too young. For a year, iney took a loan out and then i started black hat a year later than i a year later. Every year it has grown for 20 years. Host what is the difference
Actually awarded for the grants and do you work with the cyber center at Homeland Security at the nddk to on how these grants are distributed or the technology that theyre developing there . Explain a little bit how that process works. Id have to go back and ask staff. Most of what we see with states using our funds ren hansment in their centers. Id have to go back and ask. I know we have work to expand eligibility on what grants can do but theres also within the cyber world still a lot to be determined, whats the best practices and how of this is an it investment versus Homeland Security grant. They were talking about what to do during communications in an emergency. We said what would happen if communication went out and they said thats our earthquake plan.
