Army secretary nominee voices concern over strain on National Guard, military housing issues

WASHINGTON Substandard military housing, an increased reliance on the National Guard and the service’s fitness test are all readiness and retention issues that President Joe Biden’s nominee to be Army secretary wants to make a priority.
“I intend to prioritize the whole range of people issues. To ensure our soldiers and civilians have the best quality of life possible, I will strive to continue improving our Army housing, health care, child care and spouse employment opportunity,” Christine Wormuth said Thursday at her confirmation hearing in front of Senate Armed Services Committee members. ....

On-post housing overhaul


Army senior leaders joined with representatives of Lendlease Inc., the parent company of Fort Hood Family Housing, to begin the process of replacing nearly 600 homes in Chaffee and McNair Villages during a ceremony at Fort Hood April 29.
The project is part of a $1.1 billion renovation effort that will target six posts throughout the Army.
Fort Hood received the lion’s share of the allocation, with nearly half — $420 million — of the funds being awarded to the Great Place.
Lt. Gen. Douglas Gabram, the U.S. Army Installation Management Command commanding general, was one of the guest speakers at the ceremony. Before giving thanks to his civilian partners and the Fort Hood community, Gabram paused to reflect on his own time at Fort Hood. ....

Fort Hood families can look forward to new and improved housing


Fort Hood families can expect new and renovated homes over the next five years as leaders on the base and its private management company use $420 million of federal aid to improve family housing.
Leaders on post held a ceremony Thursday celebrating receiving the money and beginning the demolition of some old homes.
Representatives with LendLease Inc., which manages family housing on post, and senior Army officials spoke to a crowd of around 50 before watching some old houses get demolished by heavy construction vehicles.
III Corps and Fort Hood commander Lt. Gen. Pat White spoke during the ceremony about the funds and the improvements to family housing. ....

Army STARRS New Soldier Study (NSS): The First Days of Service
The New Soldier Study (NSS) is one of five main parts of the Army Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers (Army STARRS). Data from the NSS component help the research team learn more about the men and women who chose to enter the military
as they begin their Army careers. To capture this information, soldiers were asked, in their first hours of initial entry training, to consider volunteering for Army STARRS. Data collection took place at three training installations and began in February 2011. By the time the data collection phase ended in November 2012, more than 55,000 soldiers had volunteered for the study. ....
