Voters in six Cayuga County-area villages head to polls today

A year after village elections across New York state were postponed in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, residents will vote today on the normal schedule for such races.
Voters in six Cayuga County-area villages — four within the county s borders along with the nearby Onondaga County villages of Jordan and Skaneateles — will make selections Tuesday, March 16, for mayoral and board of trustee seats.
Mid-March is the time most villages in New York state hold their elections, but the voting in 2020 was postponed because of pandemic concerns. Those elections took place in September under an emergency order from Gov. Andrew Cuomo. ....

Montana Senate bill gives Energy committee power over consumer advocate

A Colstrip lawmaker’s attempt to hand budget control of Montana’s consumer advocate to an energy committee drew concerns Monday about how utility customers might fare.
At issue is who controls the purse strings for the Montana Consumer Counsel, the constitutionally-created defender of the public’s interest in matters concerning public utilities. The state constitution gives the Consumer Counsel power to investigate utility matters and, if necessary, sue on consumers’ behalf.
The Consumer Counsel has recently been in the crosshairs of Republican legislators for raising concerns about customer risks associated with Colstrip Power Plant, the main employer in Republican Sen. Duane Ankney’s southeastern Montana Senate district. ....
