W.Va. Corrections veteran named to DHS leadership post

CHARLESTON – A decorated former West Virginia correctional officer, who worked his way up the ranks to acting commissioner, is now leading the newest agency within the Department of Homeland Security.
Mike Coleman, formerly executive assistant to the warden at Mount Olive Correctional Complex, has been appointed director of the Division of Administrative Services by Homeland Security Secretary Jeff Sandy.
Administrative Services was created when the state consolidated its prison, jail and juvenile systems in 2018. A model for effective streamlining across state government, it handles the array of functions common to state agencies including human resources, payroll, recruiting, contracts and procurement, and vehicle and property management within DHS. ....

All Oregon House Democrats join to back Biden pandemic plan


President Joe Biden signed his $1.9 trillion pandemic recovery plan, which won final approval on Wednesday with the support of Oregon s four Democrats and opposition from its lone Republican in the U.S. House.
In descending order, the largest shares go toward economic stimulus payments to individuals, aid to state and local governments, extensions of unemployment benefits, childcare and other aid to families, reopening schools and COVID-19 vaccinations and other health care.
Biden signed the bill on Thursday, ahead of a nationally televised speech on the anniversary of the pandemic.
U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that Americans would be the first to receive COVID-19 vaccines, but any surplus would be shared with “the rest of the world.” Gavino Garay reports. ....

Bradley sponsors broadband bill in N.H. Senate


CONCORD — As Carroll County towns prepare to vote this town meeting season on creating a Broadband Communications District planning committee, the New Hampshire Senate has passed a bill designed to increase access to broadband internet.
Prime Sponsor and Majority Leader Jeb Bradley (R-Wolfeboro) called SB 85 an important step, saying, “The pandemic has revealed that we need significantly more broadband access, especially for New Hampshire residents who are working from home, attending school on-line, participating in telehealth visits with their doctor or just trying to stay in touch with family and friends.”
He added, “This legislation establishes a first-of-its-kind grant fund utilizing state and federal funds matched by cities and towns. This type of partnership is exactly what has been needed to significantly improve broadband to all Granite Staters.” ....
