Insurance bills could lead to rate increases in the Florida Keys


State legislators have proposed legislation that could dramatically increase windstorm insurance rates in Monroe County, despite the private insurance company that handles the policies carving out the Florida Keys from such excessive rate increases.
Earlier this year, the board of directors for the Citizens Property Insurance, the main windstorm insurance provider in the Keys, has requested the state Office of Insurance Regulation to allow it to enact its first rate increase for the Keys in four years.
However, the Citizens board of directors agreed to cap rate increases in Monroe County at 10% a year. However, several Republican lawmakers have proposed two insurance bills — HB 305 and SB 1574 — that include provisions to remove the rate cap during the next five years, with no mention of a carve-out for Monroe County. ....

Voter deadline is Thursday for May 1 election in New Braunfels


Thursday, April 1, is the final day to register to vote in the May 1 elections, when voters will head to the polls to select two New Braunfels City Council members, two school board trustees in the New Braunfels Independent School District and two Comal ISD trustees positions.
All seats are for three-year terms. New Braunfels residents will decide 18 proposed amendments to the city’s charter. Those seeking to register can submit completed applications from the Texas Secretary of State website, www.votetexas.gov, by Thursday. 
As of Wednesday, the county had an estimated 117,351 registered voters. The last day to submit applications for ballots by mail is Tuesday, April 20; early voting begins Monday, April 19 and ends Tuesday, April 27.  ....

Proposed housing development gains attention of environmental group


COLUMBIA – A proposed housing development has drawn attention from Friends of Rock Bridge Memorial State Park.
The Gans Wild Area is also home to Gans Creek. Friends of Rock Bridge Memorial State Park say the creek could be contaminated by storm runoff from the new development.
I m actually a part of Friends of Rock Bridge, said Rob Hill, developer of the proposed Canton Estates. The property is southeast of East Gans Road and South Bearfield Road.
Hill also developed Parkside Estates, which is on the northwest border of the state park and has homes listed in the $325,000 to $650,000 range. He said he gave very specific concessions to environmental advocates during the Parkside project. ....

Erin Boas, Najee Rodriguez elected UPUA president and vice president on lone ballot


After 21 hours of open polls, Erin Boas and Najee Rodriguez have been elected as undergraduate executive president and vice president, respectively, offices currently held by the outgoing Zachary McKay and Lexy Pathickal.
Boas (junior-international politics and economics) currently serves as an at-large representative in the University Park Undergraduate Association’s 15th Assembly. She has been involved with student government since her freshman year and also serves as UPUA’s liaison to “Movin’ On,” a Penn State music festival.
Rodriguez (sophomore-international politics, national security and history) represents the College of the Liberal Arts in the General Assembly. He also currently serves as the chair for the Committee on Justice and Equity, a newly formed legislative committee that grew quickly in the assembly. ....
