Andreescu's coach among positive COVID-19 cases forcing Australian Open players into quarantine

EDMONTON
Bianca Andreescu’s coach, Sylvain Bruneau, has tested positive for COVID-19, one of three confirmed cases that have forced 47 Australian Open players into quarantine ahead of the tournament.
The three positive cases, including Bruneau, were detected among charter flights carrying players, coaches and officials to the Australian city before Saturday’s tournament.
Despite following all of the safety protocols, including receiving a negative test result within 72 hours before his flight, Bruneau said he tested positive shortly after arriving in Melbourne.
“I am deeply sorry to share that I have just tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival here in Melbourne, after travelling from Abu Dubai on flight EY8004,” Bruneau said in a statement issued Saturday, noting he felt fine when he boarded the plane. ....

Rapid testing in Canada lagging behind as U.S. embraces the technology

OTTAWA
While medical experts and Health Canada agree that rapid testing plays an important role in the fight against COVID-19, self-administered rapid tests have yet to see approval and clinical rapid testing is lagging behind.
To date, Health Canada has approved several rapid testing methods which are typically used detect COVID-19 antigens but only for use by a healthcare professional for point-of-care testing. To date, not a single self-administered rapid test has been approved.
“Health Canada has authorized the sale and importation of COVID-19 tests only for use by health care professionals or trained operators,” Health Canada wrote on its website. “However, we are open to reviewing all testing solutions. This includes approaches that use self-testing kits, to enable individuals with or without symptoms to assess and monitor their own infection status.” ....

Massachusetts Coronavirus Vaccine Tracker

The Boston Globe
Supported by
four months of Massachusetts residents receiving COVID-19 vaccinations, only
33 percent or 1.9 million  of the 5.7 million eligible people (residents 16 and older) have been fully inoculated. At that rate, it could be well into the summer before the state reaches its goal of vaccinating 4.1 million people.
Meanwhile more than 17,000 people in Massachusetts have died from the virus.
A number of significant barriers have hindered a smooth vaccination rollout. In January, Massachusetts had one of the slowest distribution rates in the country. Many people trying to get in the growing line of residents seeking a shot encountered technology problems, or had difficulty finding appointments. ....

WHO team in Wuhan tracks coronavirus origins as new variants rack up cases

TORONTO
As new variants of the novel coronavirus pop up around the globe, a team from the World Health Organization is back where it all began in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the pandemic first started more than a year ago.
The delegation was greeted by security staff in full protective gear on Thursday before heading into a 14-day quarantine in order to start their mission.
