Coronavirus: Urgent calls for feds to revitalize Canadian Chinatowns in light of anti-Asian racism

TORONTO
Community leaders from six Canadian cities are calling for federal support to increase security and promote tourism in order to help revitalize hard-hit Chinatowns across the country.
So organizers say addressing this has to be a national priority.
“We need to support our Chinatowns. We need to support our workers [and] our small businesses in the community,” Justin Kong, executive director of Chinese Canadian National Council – Toronto Chapter, told CTV’s Your Morning on Thursday. He called for “an approach that centres local communities and marginalized people who live in our neighbourhoods.”
Kong and his group are among community leaders from Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver who are banding together in an effort being spearheaded by the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations. ....

Infographic: How much do basic necessities cost in Lebanon?

Lebanon is suffering from its worst economic crisis in 30 years. Across the country, tens of thousands of people have lost their jobs and millions more struggle to buy basic necessities – all amid the continuing coronavirus pandemic.
The crisis has caused the value of the Lebanese pound – or lira – to plummet to record lows. Lebanon imports about 80 percent of the goods it consumes, so a weak lira has had a serious effect on people’s purchasing power. Food items today cost about five times more than they did in 2019.
Since October 2019, thousands of people have protested across the country to demand an end to widespread corruption and tax increases. At the time, 10,000 lira were officially worth $6.63 and could buy basic necessities such as milk, rice and vegetables. Today, you would be lucky to buy a litre (one quart) of milk for 10,000 lira, which is worth less than $1 on the black market. ....

The rise of the COVID-19 vaccine selfie: Why you should be wary before posting

TORONTO
As Canada’s mass vaccination campaign picks up, people are sharing COVID-19 “vaxxies,” more commonly known as vaccine selfies, on social media to spread an important message.
Politicians, actors and celebrities are all apart of the latest social media trend where people share post-vaccine selfies in the hopes of encouraging others to get a jab.
Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister received his first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday, and later posted a photo of the experience.
“Vaccines are safe, effective and they help save lives,” Pallister said in the caption.
“I encourage all Manitobans to roll up their sleeves and get a vaccine as soon as you are eligible,” he added ....
