On today's hiring climate | News, Sports, Jobs

The hiring climate is interesting lately, with job postings for more businesses than not.
Attribute it to whatever you want. I only have guesses as to the exact mix of factors that have led to where we are. I was never one to support the notion that people are commodities, or objects, that can simply be replaced, but I know that many businesses view their team members that way.
If that is your business, it is about time that stopped.
In this climate, if you are a business owner, leader, or manager, you had better be doing everything you can to keep your good employees. If they are not happy, they have lots of options.

Housing shortage threatens economic growth in Northeast Michigan | News, Sports, Jobs

Tom Dihle and his wife, Cecilia, look recently at an Alpena home they considered purchasing. The couple is looking for a home because they are moving to Alpena from the St. Joseph area.
ALPENA — A shortage of housing could weaken the local workforce and future development if people wanting to invest money and talent in Alpena can’t find places to live, Northeast Michigan business leaders say.
People trying to move to Alpena sometimes have to wait months to find a place to call their own, with housing demand exceeding supply or high prices for existing homes or new construction pricing some out of the market entirely, The News learned through weeks of research and interviews with homebuyers, sellers, and officials in real estate and economic development.

Northeast Michigan deserves better | News, Sports, Jobs

Jackie Krawczak
When you think of a town hall meeting, what comes to mind? According to Oxford Dictionaries, a town hall meeting is “an event at which a politician or public official answers questions from members of the public.”
If I hear about a town hall event, I expect it will be an opportunity for open dialogue between the public and one or more elected officials.
I was informed via email about a week prior to an event that was being promoted as a town hall event hosted by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office, scheduled for Feb. 2, that would feature Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist. Initially, I was pleased to see that the governor’s office was taking proactive steps to reach out to Northeast Michigan for a conversation.

We need an adult elf on the shelf | News, Sports, Jobs

Alpena News guest columnist
If you are not familiar with the Elf on the Shelf craze, here is a summary: “The Elf on the Shelf” is a book released in 2005 that explains that Santa uses scouts, or helper elves, to keep track of which children are naughty and which are nice. Those elves scout for him during the day, and, at night, they return to tell Santa what they learned at their assigned home.
I recently played the part of one of Santa’s elves. Not an Elf on the Shelf, but one who was assisting Santa at a Snow Globe Santa event. The event was fun and magical for the kids. It happened to take place outdoors during what might possibly end up as the biggest single-day snowstorm this season. The snow made it beautiful.
