Sukhcharan Singh grows walnuts in Yuba City, California, about 40 miles north of Sacramento. Like many Sikh farmers in this small Central Valley city, Singh’s thoughts are occupied by the ongoing protests in India.
“I lose sleep over this. When I was there, it was a poor country, yes, but it was a good country,” said Singh, 68, flipping through notes he has taken on the latest news out of India. “Last night I finally slept at 11.30.”
Since the end of November, hundreds of thousands of farmers, mostly from the agricultural states of Punjab and Haryana, have been protesting on the outskirts of Delhi, making the nation’s capital inaccessible for miles. They are demanding that the Hindu nationalist prime minister, Narendra Modi, repeal three laws passed hurriedly by parliament – “shoved down the throats of the people,” as Singh puts it ....

New York– US President Joe Biden’s Press Secretary Jen Psaki has condemned the desecration of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in California and expressed concern over the incident.
“We certainly would have concern about the desecration of monuments of Gandhi. And you know, that’s certainly what we would express,” Psaki said on Monday.
“But certainly we would, you know, condemn that desecration and watch it closely.”
Asked by a reporter about Biden’s thoughts on the attack, she said: “If there’s more to share on the President’s point of view on it, I’m happy to get back to you on that.” ....

New York, Feb 2 : US President Joe Biden’s Press Secretary Jen Psaki has condemned the desecration of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in California and expressed concern over the incident.

Breaking News | Legal Kano Court sentences two men to 24 strokes of cane for stealing mobile phones

Following the theft of two mobile phones, a Kano Magistrates’ Court, on Friday, ordered that two men; Jabir Idris, 25, and Salisu Hamisu, 32, be given 12 strokes of cane each.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Idris, a resident of Jakara Quarters, and Hamisu of Dandishe Quarters all in Kano, were convicted on a two-count charge of theft and criminal misappropriation.
After they pleaded guilty to the charges but also begged for leniency, the Magistrate, Farouk Ibrahim, sentenced the convicts to 12 strokes of cane.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Lamido Soron-Dinki, had told the court that two persons, Ismail Sharif and Bashir Yahaya jointly reported the case at the Fagge Police Division, Kano, on Jan. 4. ....
