Troisi equaliser helps Wanderers extend Sydney Derby unbeaten run

James Troisi conceded a penalty before equalising in the space of five minutes to keep Western Sydney Wanderers' unbeaten run against Sydney FC alive and earn a 1-1 draw with the reigning Champions in Saturday's Sydney derby at Stadium Australia.
An entertaining 26th Sydney derby exploded into life after the hour mark when Troisi's foul on Milos Ninkovic saw Kosta Barbarouses strike unerringly from the penalty spot.
But the ex-Socceroo Troisi popped up with the equaliser after an uncharacteristic error from Andrew Redmayne allowed Troisi to slide the ball into an empty net.
It was an equaliser the Red and Black - shaded by their rivals in the opening half - merited thanks to a lively second half display.

Welcome to another season of A-League tips and predictions on
The Roar.
Despite the rather jittery lead in and a 2020 that each and every one of us would probably prefer to forget, domestic football will be back on our screens this Monday night.
It will be a season like no other, with a decreased salary cap, reduced crowd capacities still likely and a brand new naming rights sponsor in the form of everyone’s favourite destination for a snag on Saturday mornings, Bunnings Warehouse.

Wanderers boss Robinson lauds 'exceptional' academy gem

Western Sydney Wanderers coach Carl Robinson says he's not surprised by Thomas Aquilina's eye-catching start to A-League life.
The 19-year-old defender made just his second senior start at left wing-back for the Red and Black in Saturday night's 1-1 draw with rivals Sydney FC.
Aquilina had Socceroo Rhyan Grant and Anthony Caceres to contend with from his roaming position on the left flank but held his own impressively and almost sent Wanderers fans into raptures with a header that nearly broke the deadlock late on.
"It doesn't surprise me one bit," said Robinson when asked about the former Bossley Park High School junior's performance.

Macarthur record famous win over Wanderers in inaugural A-League match

Macarthur FC have made a dream start to life in the A-League, winning their inaugural match 1-0 in a pulsating derby against Western Sydney Wanderers on Wednesday night.
Spanish substitute Benat Extebarria’s second-half free-kick deflected off skipper Mark Milligan and trickled into an empty net to send Bulls players, staff and fans into raptures.
Ante Milicic’s side became just the sixth team in A-League history to win their inaugural league fixture, just like Western United FC did last season.
And it was just reward for an excellent display by the Bulls, who took the game to the Wanderers from the outset.

'One of the best keepers Australia has produced': High praise for Federici as Macarthur make dream start

Among the high-quality imports, veteran Socceroos and exciting young talent, the acquisition of experienced goalkeeper Adam Federici perhaps didn’t receive as much fanfare as other signings to new A-League outfit Macarthur FC.
But the 35-year-old showed just how important he’ll be to the Bulls’ chances in their inaugural season with a stunning display against Western Sydney Wanderers on Wednesday night.
Federici was relatively quiet for the first 43 minutes at Bankwest Stadium but was instrumental in his side’s historic 1-0 win at Bankwest Stadium.
The ex-Premier League gloveman made four vital – and world-class - saves either side of the break to ensure the Bulls made a winning start to life in the A-League.

Somehow we got here. I’m not sure how but we did.
The 2020-21 A-League season kicked off in style at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong last night, with fans in the stadium and a global pandemic well and truly removed from the minds of most watching the action.
In spite of the nervous reality still existing in New South Wales, Australian domestic football was finally given the green light, and the opening fixture did not disappoint. As each A-League club makes its first appearance over the coming days, all will be hoping to sing their victory song to launch the season the right way.

Wanderers coach Robinson laughs off poaching claims

He's fast building a reputation as the A-League's master poacher, but Western Sydney Wanderers coach Carl Robinson insists there are deeper reasons why James Troisi and Bernie Ibini chose to quit their respective clubs.
Troisi broke his contract with Adelaide United earlier this month to sign a two-year deal with the Wanderers.
A few days later Ibini paid out the rest of his Newcastle Jets contract in order to also sign with the Wanderers.
And Scottish defender Ziggy Gordon quit Central Coast to ink a deal with Robinson's outfit.
The three defections have been a major boost for Robinson, who himself quit as coach of the Jets in October to take up the head role at the Wanderers.

Juric 'the best number nine in the country', claims Veart

Adelaide United coach Carl Veart believes he's got the best No.9 in the country in Tomi Juric and expects the fringe Socceroo to only get better as he settles back into life in the A-League.
Juric, 29, signed for Adelaide in November after his time in Europe petered out in a stint in Bulgaria, and he started in their season opener against Western United on Monday.
The striker played 84 minutes and came dangerously close to scoring twice, with one effort cleared off the goal line.

He also set up Ben Halloran for another near-miss in an impressive return to the A-League at Geelong's GMHBA Stadium.
