Established in 2000, the Madison County PEP Grant will soon hand out $1.11 million in funding for various park and recreation projects around the county. Money for the grants come from a one-tenth of one percent sales tax. The Madison County Board will vote on the issue on April 21.
Madison County Community Development Administrator Dave Tanzyus tells The Big Z there was a nice variety of projects submitted this year.

EDWARDSVILLE – Park and recreation grants totaling more than $1.1 million were approved by the Madison County Board’s Grants Committee Monday for projects ranging from new and improved paths and trails to repayment of previous park loans.
Funding comes from the county’s portion of the park and recreation tax. In 2000 voters in Madison and St. Clair counties approved a 1/10th percent sales tax to fund recreation projects and create the Metro East Park and Recreation District. Half the money goes to the respective counties to be disbursed as grants, the rest to the MEPRD for its project, which also includes grants.

ALTON — Aldermen on Wednesday night took the first steps in possibly adding a new restaurant in Alton.
At Wednesday’s city council meeting, aldermen approved preliminary and final subdivision plats for Alton Circle Subdivision proposed by Sheppard, Morgan & Schwaab, Inc.
The area is the lot adjacent to the AT&T Store on 1725 Homer Adams Parkway in Alton. The plan is to expand the area slightly to make room for a drive-through restaurant. According to Mayor Brant Walker, the restaurant is from a nationally known brand not currently in Alton. Construction is set to begin “very soon,” Walker said.
