2020 has been quite the year, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Among those we lost in the year that’s coming to a close were seven members of the Baseball Hall of Fame: Lou Brock, Tom Seaver, Bob Gibson, Al Kaline, Whitey Ford, Joe Morgan, and just a couple of days ago, Phil Niekro:
Master of the knuckleball and a great mentor, leader and friend, Hall of Famer and @braves legend Phil Niekro passed away overnight at the age of 81. https://t.co/aj7uScYnuypic.twitter.com/F1GmX9Yb1n— National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum ⚾ (@baseballhall) December 27, 2020

From Kobe Bryant to Diego Maradona, a year of staggering losses in sports

There were so many this year.
Sports in 2020 was an unending state of mourning. It was as if every week, sometimes days, another luminary fell, bringing a cascade of condolence and remembrance.
It began New Year's Day, a harbinger of what the year held, with the deaths of David Stern and Don Larsen. Not long after came a seismic jolt, the helicopter crash of Kobe Bryant in the fog-shrouded California hills that reverberated across sports and across continents.
Deep into the year, a bookend to Bryant, Diego Maradona died from a heart attack in Argentina weeks after brain surgery, the waves of grief rippling across football. It seemed a whole wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame was ripped away - Al Kaline, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Whitey Ford, Joe Morgan, Phil Niekro. American Football lost a big piece of its heart: Don Shula, Gale Sayers, Paul Hornung, Bobby Mitchell. Gone from college basketball was John Thompson, as imposing and important a coach as any.

This has been a hard year for everyone. And in the world of baseball, it has hit particularly hard. Major League Baseball lost a staggering number of legends in 2020 -- those who represented the very best this sport has had to offer for decades -- and we’ll all be struggling with their absence for the rest of our baseball lives.
Today, as we wind down the final days of this extremely difficult year, we take a look back at the baseball people we lost in 2020. Names are listed in alphabetical order by last name. There were seven Hall of Famers who passed away this year, and those are noted with an asterisk.

things set up. the folks who joined are ready and prepared. i think we will have a good time tonight. >> jay, i walk in and there's brian studying your films with the white sox or the angels or the phillies or the athletics, the address, as well as the dodgers and the cubs. he wants to win. >>, but i already have the hot stuff ready to put in their shorts. don't worry about it. they will be running around faster than you thought. we have it all taken care of. >> tell me about the perception you had. there was a draft when you were coming up, right? >> yep. >> now we have a volunteer force. a lot different how the military is viewed today. is that disheartening for you? >> it is because when i went in, and the former troops came out of vietnam they were kind. chastised and not thought of highly and some were spit on coming back and the war was very unpopular back then. today people realize the sacrifices they have made, and what they have done. today the troops are more
