NC DEMOCRATIC ELECTED OFFICIALS CALL FOR REMOVAL OF TRUMP: After pro-Trump rioters breached the Capitol and forced Congress to evacuate and lock down during the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory, several North Carolina lawmakers, including Gov. Roy Cooper, have called for Trump to be removed from office, either through the 25th Amendment process or through impeachment. “President Trump invited violent rioters to the U.S. Capitol and encouraged the mob to breach the Capitol building and attempt a coup. This seditious act comes just days after he was caught on tape soliciting election fraud in the state of Georgia. He must be removed from office immediately,” said first-term Rep. Kathy Manning, a Greensboro Democrat, in a statement. Democratic Reps. Alma Adams of Charlotte and David Price of Chapel Hill both said Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet should take that step. ....

"Hippies for Trump": Asheville man among nine North Carolinians arrested for right-wing insurrection at U.S. Capitol


On Monday, as thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump prepared to travel to Washington, D.C., to protest the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s election, 46-year-old Thomas Gronek of Asheville was ready.
A friend of Gronek posted photos and a video to Facebook showing off Gronek’s ride an old school bus spray-painted with a psychedelic color scheme, Grateful Dead iconography, pro-Trump graffiti and “Stop The Steal” messages.

The next day. the bus was stopped by the D.C. Metropolitan police in the 700 block of Constitution Avenue, minutes from the United States Capitol. Police said they found fireworks, a pistol, a rifle, a large-capacity ammunition feeding device and more than 300 rounds of ammunition aboard. Gronek was arrested on weapons charges. The driver of the bus,  34-year-old Timothy Keller, 34, of Asheville, was charged with “no permit” for the bus, according to police reports. ....

Four people were killed, 83 were arrested and 50 D.C. police officers were injured in the riots and demonstrations near and at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday.

WASHINGTON D.C., DC Eight people from North Carolina were arrested Wednesday amid the chaos at the Capitol in Washington D.C. when a pro-Trump mob overran and broke into the building.
Angry supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol to prevent a peaceful transfer of power, forcing lawmakers to be rushed from the building and interrupting challenges to Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory. ....

WASHINGTON (WNCN) – Washington Metropolitan police said at least seven people from North Carolina were among the dozens arrested during Wednesday’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. ....

County commission says no to civil penalties


Lee County commissioners on Monday rejected Gov. Roy Cooper’s request for counties to impose civil penalties against those who violate his COVID-19 executive order.
The commission, minus Robert Reives who’s been out for an unknown reason, unanimously adopted a resolution presented by Commissioner Bill Carver. In the resolution, Carver said that the county, local businesses, schools and law enforcement were responding appropriately to the pandemic and that the board should not create laws that would fine people for not wearing masks or violating gathering limits.
“We also need to recognize that . imposing those kinds of constraints, those kinds of civil penalties, would be onerous to the sheriff’s department. They have their hands full right now, and to chase around and to do this kind of thing — I’m speaking for some input from the sheriff — he just really finds that, that would be difficult,” Carver said. ....
