regional medical center of san jose set up four hospital beds inside this tent next to the e.r. to absorb the overflow of patients. because of this, we felt that the emergency department had the potential to become overwhelmed and we wanted to be able to treat these patients quickly and safely. reporter: the hospital had seen up to 70 more patients a day come in with flu-like symptoms. most have tested positive for h1n1, which caused the worldwide pandemic in 2009. across town, valley medical center says it s seen a similar dramatic spike in flu cases in the past 48 hours. we are seeing patients with fever, chills, body aches, coughs, coughing, runny nose, some things typical of the flu. reporter: to date there have been five flu-related deaths in the bay area. none had received the flu vaccine. it s not too soon to get your shot. peak season is january through march. regional medical center plans to set up a larger tent in the parking lot today to accommodate ....
