Previous anniversaries of Cubs' first league game

The Cubs are scheduled to host the Pirates today, May 7 -- the
150th anniversary of their first "league" game, also played at home: their National Association debut, a victory over the Cleveland Forest Citys.
After 3 innings at the Union Grounds, the White Stockings, as they were known then, led, 14-1. But they barely hung on to win, 14-12.
I described that game in detail in a previous post.
Then I wondered how the Cubs had fared on other significant anniversaries of that historic win.
Here is what I found:

Do We Stinks?, Famous Cubs Ranting, Best Bats Become Worst Bats, and Other Cubs Bullets

If humidity were a baseball team, it just went from getting shutout for 20 straight innings to putting up a 15 spot in the first inning.
•   All right. So, it was fine for last night to take the fun that we were given in the form of Anthony Rizzo pitching and striking out Freddie Freeman, but when you reset things for the team as a whole – especially after another laugher of a blowout loss – it’s got a rough feeling about it. The Cubs are up to 20 straight scoreless innings, there isn’t a great reason to believe the boom-or-bust (at best) offense is going to change, two of the should-be reliable starters in the rotation are falling apart, and the bullpen is going through that “sorting” process where you’re seeing some ugly performances. There’s still so much individual talent on the roster that a great run remains possible, but this is the kind of bad stretch that – depending on what comes next – tells you a lot about the plans ahead. As we’ve discussed, without the look of a REALLY competitive team come June, I think the selloff plans will be made.

Woodlot organizations merge

Article content
The Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) is merging with the Ontario Woodlot Association (OWA). Both already share office space and one staff member at Kemptville.
OWA executive director John Pineau is now heading both organizations. EOMF general manager Astrid Nielsen wants to devote her full attention to her forest management company and Jim Hendry, who managed tbe woodlot certification program, is semi-retiring and working at his forest management company.

Pineau says the move is being viewed by both organizations as “an opportunity” that had been talked about as a possibility for several years.

Great individual seasons by Cubs who had bad springs, since 2006

Great individual seasons by Cubs who had bad springs, since 2006

This article topic was suggested in the comments to my “great springs” article from Wednesday morning.
Spring training numbers generally don’t mean too much, especially now when games are absolutely not played the way regular-season games are, regulars play maybe half the games, lineups are set so that regulars get the most at-bats, etc.
So these are players who had terrible springs, then went on to have good regular season numbers.
Let’s remember some guys!
2006: Henry Blanco
Blanco was in his second year as a Cubs backup and really didn’t hit at all in spring games: .133/.129/.167 (4-for-30). His OBP is lower than his BA because he had a sacrifice bunt AND a sacrifice fly. He did steal a base, which is one more steal than he had in his entire four-year Cubs playing career.

Frank Heerkens is the president of the Ontario Maple Producers' Association and the man behind reviving the Kemptville College sugar bush. Walking out into the bush Heerkens demonstrates how the smaller green lines are hooked up to the tap on a tree once the sap starts to flow – in about two to three weeks, he reckons.(HEDDY SOROUR/Local Journalism Initiative) jpg, BT

Frank Heerkens is a maple syrup producer based in Chesterville. He’s also, as of this year, the president of the Ontario Maple Producers’ Association, so he knows a thing or two about maple syrup.

You might wish to keep three things in mind as you read this article. I try to limit my usage of some terms due to a lack of my ability to grasp any useful definition of the term. I'm not a huge fan of blaming one specific individual for an action regularly undertaken similarly by a large percentage of the people in the subset they're usually associated with. And, for whatever reasons, I haven't taken to Korean or Japanese pro baseball. Combining those three, in a COVID-impacted off-season, MLB owners have largely and apparently disregarded a reasonable selection of posted international talent, for whatever reason.

When you have a full scoreboard, that makes things much easier to sleuth. Still, clues are needed.
The first clue is the Toyota sign at the left of the photo. That was installed, to much consternation, in June 2010. It finally came down during the second bleacher reconstruction, which began after the 2014 season. So that narrows things down to four and a half seasons.
The Cardinals are the opponent, and “So come on down to Wrigley Field” is on the message board beneath the scoreboard. That’s part of the lyrics of “Go Cubs Go,” so the Cubs have obviously just won the game, a fact confirmed by the 5-0 final score that’s in the process of being posted.
