COLUMN: The Three Black Reconstructions in America

“’…we stood in arms, firing on the revolted slaves, of whom we kill’d some and wounded many…and many of the most mutinous leapt over board, and drowned themselves in the ocean with much resolution…’ John Barbot, Slave Ship Captain, 1701.” 
The quote is the opening lines of Vincent Harding’s book, “There Is A River: The Black Struggle for Freedom in America,” which I have in my home library and refer to frequently. There have been numerous mini uprisings by Blacks shortly after the first slave ship deposited its human cargo in 1619 e.g. the most famous being revolts by Gabriel Presser in Virginia, 1800; Demark Vesey in South Carolina, 1822; Nat Turner’s rebellion in Southampton, Virginia, 1831.  But the aforementioned insurrections were quickly suppressed, ....
