Chikungunya. the chance this will be a nationwide outbreak is very small to nonexistent, but little focal areas of infection and transmission, yes. reporter: florida has seen the most cases of the disease with 77. including the first two u.s. acquired cases earlier this month. now, there is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat the virus. the new jersey state health department is urging residents to eliminate standing water in their backyards, put screens on windows and doors, and wear insect repellant when outside. so, josh, it s great to have you here. how long does it take for symptoms to appear and who is most at risk? if infected it would take a person three to seven days. those most at risk are infants under a year old, those 65 or older, or people with chronic conditions such as diabetes. makes sense, some of the most susceptible in our population. abc s josh haskell. thank you so much for joining us ....

America where the outbreak began. true in new jersey which announced 25 new cases. here s abc s josh haskell. reporter: 25 new jersey residents who returned from traveling in the caribbean have reportedly brought back the mosquito-carrying virus chikungunya. boy, is it painful. in african language it means bent over with pain. reporter: the virus is rarely fatal but can be debilitating. symptoms, high fever. headache, muscle, joint pain. the virus is not contagious person to person. local mosquitoes can sting a person who contracted it elsewhere, therefore, acquiring the disease and passing it along to people who have not traveled abroad. randomly sampling the county selecting mosquitoes and submitting those for testing. reporter: mosquitoes in new jersey don t appear to have contracted chikungunya at this point. with 25 cases the health department is setting traps using bait that smells like human sweat to attract the asian tiger mosquito who transmits ....
