SOUTH SHORE With a sharp wit and a picture-perfect memory, a World War II veteran sat in his brand new recliner as he rattled off statistics about his 100 years

For Rev. Dannie Bell, serving in the U.S. Army was an honor. “I was drafted in 1966,” Bell said. “I went in during the height of the Vietnam War.” He hadn’t been away from his family more than two weeks in his life before he went to basic training at the age of 19 in August, 1966. “I went to Fort Campbell, Kentucky for 10 weeks,” Bell said. “I went to Fort Dix, New Jersey for supply clerk school.” Bell ended up with a nine-day leave before heading back for duty.
