Edwards County Commissioners met yesterday in front of a large crowd of concerned farmers. They held discussions on solar farming, as solar energy company Ecoplexus talking about wording for upcoming solar farm regulation requirements. Commissioners have considered adopting a 500-foot setback from nearby residences to protect homeowners close to nearby solar power farms; currently, this would allow for 164 megawatts of power, and real estate taxes could increase from $425 for 40 acres used for solar farms to an estimated $26,000. The Albion City Council met last night. It heard the EPA has denied a compliance request for additional time to design a water treatment plant, but a meeting is scheduled for later this week to discuss the plant with the EPA. The council also heard Treasurer Sidney Gracyalny and Alderwoman Heather Borowiak will be leaving their positions in August and September, respectively. City Attorney Brian Shinkle asked for permission to file a breach of contract lawsuit against former Albion Police Officer Austin Mulkey, who had his training paid for by the City but was employed for only a few months before switching agencies; the City says it is owed approximately $13,000, and Mulkey has until May 17th to reply to a letter for negotiations before the suit is officially filed. The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce says it is planning a flag display on the Wayne County Courthouse lawn in honor of veterans and/or active military members. A 3x5 flag will stand on a nine foot staff for five patriotic holidays each year: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Veteran's Day. Each sponsored flag will include the name of the service member on the staff. Anyone wanting to sponsor a flag should call the Chamber office at 842-6116, email chamber@fairfieildilcitygov.us, or go to the office on 121 East Main Street in Fairfield. The Chamber also says McDonald's in Fairfield will host a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow (May 4) at 10 for its new building. The community is invited to attend. The Wabash Valley College TRIO Student Support Services program says five of its participants were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society last week in Joyce Lang, Michael Keneipp, Christan Manning, Christian Flores, and Katelyn Wagner. Their Academic Counselor is Tayna Smith. In addition, Peer Mentors for the 2022-2023 academic year were announced Friday; Flores and Wagner will serve in the position for incoming program participants, and Manning was recognized as TRIO SSS Student Ambassador for the upcoming year. The IDPH reported three new cases of COVID-19 in Wayne County since Friday afternoon. Marion County added six cases, Jefferson County four, Clay and White counties two, and Lawrence and Wabash counties one. Edwards, Richland, and Hamilton counties held steady on the state website. As a state, Illinois announced 8,981 new cases and six additional deaths. River stages as of early this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 9.78 feet, below the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 5.46 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 7.90 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 2.74 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 11.07 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 10.29 feet. Today's crude oil price is $98.25, up $0.50 from yesterday. The June crude oil price is $104.12, up $0.36 from yesterday morning.
