Earthquake strengthening planned for Wellington Cable Car tunnel in preparation for the big one


Strengthening work is planned for the Wellington Cable Car’s Everton Terrace tunnel.
The proposed work, currently in the resource consent application stage, would consist of strengthening three elements of the tunnel; the tunnel portal itself, the wall outside, and the hill slope over top, all of which sit within the Kelburn Cable Car historic area.
Cable Car Company chief executive Cesar Piotto​ said there was no set date for the work to take place, but the resource application asked for a 10-year window, with the option of an extension.
The Everton tunnel was constructed between 1898 and 1901, and is approximately 103m long, 5m high, with a maximum width of 6.1m. ....

There have been nearly 200 hours of sunshine in the country s sunniest city so far this year, compared to a dismal 98 hours in the gloomiest.
MetService data shows New Plymouth had recorded 198 hours of sunshine by January 19.
Invercargill has had the bleakest start to 2021 so far, with 50 per cent less sunshine than New Plymouth.

The Marklund Philip Center in Bloomingdale became the first of the nonprofit s facilities to receive the coronavirus vaccine Thursday, Jan. 14.
Tilly W. was among the first residents at the Marklund Philip Center in Bloomingdale to receive the COVID-19 vaccine Jan. 14. The Philip Center, with 21 residents, was the first of the Marklund sites to receive the vaccine. Other facilities are located in Elgin and Geneva. ....

Aurora resident Mumba Kabemba, a student at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, has received a $1,500 scholarship from the Aurora Area Retired Teachers Association.
Dick Schindel of Aurora, association president and former East Aurora School District 131 educator, made the announcement.
 
Kabemba, a 2019 West Aurora High School graduate, is a second-year business administration major at the community college. Her career goal is to become a business adviser to women in refugee camps. ....
