In June 1922, the wealthy and philanthropic north country native son Edward John Noble made a huge land transaction in the Thousand Islands. Mr. Noble and A. Graham Miles, son-in-law of George C. Boldt, purchased the entire Boldt estate in the Thousand Islands which ranged from Boldt Castle, Thousand Islands Club, Wellesley Farm, about 1,500 acres on Wellesley Island to waterfront property at Alexandria Bay known as the Cornwall property and several smaller cottages. They also purchased property around Hopewell Hall on Wellesley Island. The estate sits atop a bluff on Wellesley Island, off the main shore of Alexandria Bay. However, Mr. Boldtâs only daughter, Mrs. Niles R. (Clover) Johaneson, who was married and divorced twice, retained Hopewell Hall for herself. ....
Charlene Grunertâs latest attempt to summon something miraculous involves a classified advertisement. âJust barely getting by, month-to-month, looking for a miracle,â Charlene wrote in the ad she placed in the Watertown Daily Times. Desperate and losing hope, she purchased the classified ad hoping for divine intervention in saving the barns that have been in her family for about a century. Sheâs lived on the property, once an active dairy farm and horse stable a few miles outside the city of Watertown on State Route 283, for several years. The spirit of her grandparents and mother still roam the old farm and Charlene occasionally is lucky enough to harvest a special memory about them. She told me about one when staff photographer Kara Dry and I visited her last week. ....

The center began a campaign to raise funds to stay open for 2021, and has raised 60 percent of its $200,000 goal. “It will mean we will be able to keep all of the actors and staff employed,” said Kelly Burdick, the center’s director of communications of the fundraising goal, which would enable the center to continue to bring entertainment to the community for the 2021 season. ....
