Employing more nurses can reduce total health costs, study suggests

The Lancet medical journal suggests that employing more nurses can result in cost savings double the cost of employing the additional nurses. The study was conducted in Australia but may well have important implications for nursing in South Africa.
The study, conducted across 55 hospitals in Queensland, suggests that a recent state policy to introduce a minimum ratio of one nurse to four patients for day shifts has successfully improved patient care, with a 7% drop in the chance of death and readmission, and 3% reduction in length of stay for every one less patient a nurse has on their workload.
It is these reductions in readmissions and length of hospital stays that resulted in the cost savings.

South Africa take note: Employing more nurses can slash...

A study conducted across 55 hospitals in Queensland suggests that a recent state policy to introduce a minimum ratio of one nurse to four patients for day shifts has successfully improved patient care, with a 7% drop in the chance of death and readmission and a 3% reduction in length of stay for every one less patient a nurse has on their workload. These reductions resulted in the cost savings.
The study compared 27 hospitals where the policy was implemented with 28 hospitals where it wasn’t.
“Despite some evidence that more nurses in hospitals could benefit patient safety, similar policies have not been widely implemented across the globe, partly due to an absence of data on the long-term effects and costs, as well as limited resources,” the study authors said.

Third wave is here, so why is SA sending ventilators to India?

As the Sars-Cov-2 virus continues to ravage India, which is fast approaching 4 million active cases, South Africa will be donating ventilators to help in its efforts to prevent deaths. The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) isn’t happy about the donations. “While numbers have been skyrocketing the government and the Department of Health have been closing temporary treatment facilities, the vaccination programme is very slow and there is no indication of ramping up the acquisition of ventilators, oxygen and extra beds in preparation for the third wave,” Nehawu spokesperson Khaya Xaba said in a statement yesterday. Nehawu wants clear govt update on vaccine procurement, rising infections
The union said that while many South Africans had adhered to COVID-19 regulations, the country’s vaccine rollout had been uninspiring, with thousands of healthcare workers yet to be inoculated.

This comes after the Mchunu called on South Africans to send suggestions on how to resolve the deadlocked wage talks between public servants and government.
Nehawu spokesperson Khaya Xaba says if the minister is cannot do his job he needs to step aside.
"We cannot have a minister who is supposed to undertake his duties but relegates them to the public.
"However, the public was not there when they [government] signed the agreement in 2018," says Xaba.

Johannesburg – The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) wants to intensify its fight against employers who flout rules and treat workers with sheer disregard.
This comes after the union won a case of unfair dismissal of its members at the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI).
Nehawu national spokesperson Khaya Xaba said members were employed by the department for many years on contract, which was renewed each year by the department.
He said in October 2019 they were served with another contract extension which was to remain effective from October to December 2019.

The state of Gauteng public hospitals has been “deplorable” for years, with previous cases of hospital fires clearly showing that there is no accountability for non-compliance with occupational health and safety standards, said the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu). Their statement comes after about 400 patients at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital urgently had to be evacuated to other facilities, due to a blaze at the health facility at the weekend. The fire started on Friday night and continued into Saturday, after a medical supplies room caught alight on Friday morning. The hospital fire has...
