Story: Purdy AmeriCorps honors MLK (3/20/21)

Back in January, the Purdy AmeriCorps Reading Coaches decided to sponsor a project in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We worked with students in grades K-5 to make cards for residents of Lacoba Nursing Home, said Renae Neill, reading Coach director. In addition to our local project, we also publicized it on the MLK Day of Service website and invited people from all over the United States to join us by reaching out to senior citizens who are facing loneliness in this season of Covid shutdowns. We were thrilled to hear from over 100 people all over the country who were planning to join us. Most of them sent their cards to people in their own community. However, we received packages from people in Arizona, California, Colorado, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. These folks wanted us to let people in our local nursing home know that they have not been forgotten.
