Malaysian Police Arrest 12 Law Enforcers Suspected of Links to Crime Ring

Reuters
Malaysian police arrested 12 senior law enforcement officers on suspicion of working with an alleged crime lord linked to a Chinese criminal syndicate, the police chief of Johor state said on Tuesday.
Two officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) were among those arrested, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said.
“The Johor Commercial Crimes [unit] had launched an operation from April 21 to 27 and arrested 12 law enforcement officers aged between 36 and 49,” the Johor police chief said. “The officers were rounded up … in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malacca and Negeri Sembilan.”
The arrests came as Malaysian police intensified the crackdown against law enforcement officers suspected of working with fugitive criminal Nicky Liow Soon Hee – the alleged leader of the Nicky Gang.

US Sanctions Help Crack Malaysian Crime Ring

BenarNews
A series of American sanctions on a Macau underworld kingpin helped Kuala Lumpur pry the lid off a Malaysian connection to criminal groups in China and related police corruption in the Southeast Asian nation, a senior police official told BenarNews.
Sanctions by the U.S. Treasury Department allowed the Royal Malaysia Police to connect the dots, which led to the uncovering of the Nicky Gang allegedly headed by Nicky Liow Soon Hee, Johor state police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said.
“It was crucial information, as based on the tip of the iceberg we were able to study the serious and extensive operations of the local syndicate, which has international connections,” Ayob told BenarNews., an RFA-affiliated online news service.

Australia needs a Magnitsky Act | The Strategist

Australia’s war against organised crime has hotted up. The arrest of accused drug lord Tse Chi Lop and allegations of large-scale money laundering in Australian casinos have exposed to the public the deep economic connections transnational and organised crime syndicates have established here, and the scale of the threat we face.
The extent of these connections adds urgency to the recent call by the human rights subcommittee of the parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade for Australia to adopt Magnitsky-style legislation.
The US Magnitsky Act began as an effort to hold officials of foreign countries accountable for human rights abuses. The legislation, which applies globally, gives the US government the legal means to the freeze assets of and ban US entry to those it lists for involvement in human rights abuses. Canada and the UK have introduced similar legislation.

This story touches on a topic somewhat tangential to Italian-American organized crime, but, hey, man does not live on bread alone. (In other words, expand your horizons, whydontcha?)... We will post the next part of the Gravano Testimony Series shortly....
Things are not going too well in Hong Kong these days. The former British colony, long admired as a bustling free-market city-state, is facing the wrath of China. Agitations against the imposition of Chinese law have triggered fierce protests and police crackdowns.

But it was not just the police who were beating up students and democratic protestors in the city. Mobs of masked men in t-shirts were seen rampaging with relative impunity. They were identified as members of the infamous 14K triad – a major organized crime group based in Hong Kong.

-Tse Chi Lop (57): Also known as Sam Gor, or “Brother Number Three” in Cantonese, the China-born Canadian national was based in Asia and is the suspected senior leader of the syndicate. The Straits Times reports the 65-year-old head of the 14K triads is currently wanted in Malaysia for fraud. That’s after he allegedly failed to transfer $1.4 million in shares in Malaysia Bursa-listed computer software company Inix to a third party, as had been agreed.
In August last year, Inix surprised the country’s business community by introducing Wan as its new non-executive chairman, an appointment that lasted all of four months.
In December, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against Wan for spreading his triad criminal network through Southeast Asia and across China’s Belt and Road economic bloc.
