Fremont withdraws from fire territory talks

FREMONT — Forming a new fire territory in the northern part of Steuben County has been put on hold as Fremont decided to pull out of the discussion.
The decision was unanimous among the members of the town council during the council’s regular monthly meeting held Tuesday. Only one councilman, Lon Keyes, was absent.
Because of the council’s decision, the third and final public hearing on the territory that was slated for Thursday has been canceled.
The Fremont Fire Territory would have encompassed the towns of Fremont and Orland as well as Clear Lake Township, Fremont Township, Jamestown Township and Millgrove Township. Any one of the six backing out would nix the process until next spring at the earliest, as state law mandates all three required public hearings and a vote have to take place between Jan. 1 and March 31.

Commissioners open 2021 by reorganizing

LAGRANGE — The LaGrange County Commissioners spent a little time Monday morning at their first meeting of 2021 doing a little housekeeping, reorganizing their board.
Newly elected Commissioner Kevin Myers was named the board’s new vice president, replacing Commissioner Terry Martin in that position who was named the board’s president at the commissioner’s last meeting of 2020.
Myers is serving on the Board of Commissioners for the second time, having defeated former Commissioner Dennis Kratz in the June Republican primary. Myers served on the board of commissioners for 15 months after being appointed to finish the final 15 months of former Commissioner Jac Price’s term in office. Price died in office in 2015.

After 50 years, hippies welcome in an Indiana county

After 50 years, hippies welcome in an Indiana county

LAGRANGE, Ind. (AP) — Peace, love — and LaGrange.
LaGrange County, Indiana, has repealed a 1971 law that was intended to block huge gatherings like the 1969 Woodstock music festival in New York state.
“I called it our anti-hippie ordinance,” county commissioner Dennis Kratz said with a smile.
The ordinance regulated large gatherings that lasted more than 12 hours and involved more than 500 people, The News Sun reported.
The law was recently dropped as part of an effort to repeal ordinances that have no practical use but have been on the books for as long as 100 years, especially certain traffic restrictions. County attorney Kurt Bachman’s research lasted three years.
