Origami Workshop – Second Event of Japan & Black L.A. Initiative

Origami Workshop – Second Event of Japan & Black L.A. Initiative
Posted On
On April 22, the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, together with Japan Foundation Los Angeles and the United Methodist Church (UMC), California-Pacific Conference, co-sponsored an online origami workshop with instructor Kathleen Sheridan of the nonprofit organization Origami and You.
This was the second event of the Japan and Black L.A. Initiative, which grew out of conversations between the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles and pastors of predominantly Black churches of the UMC West District in the Greater Los Angeles area.
Through the hands-on experience of making origami creations together virtually, the participants of the workshop deepened cultural and mutual understanding, enhancing the ties between the Japanese and Black communities.

“We’ve had dry springs before, but that is just astonishing,” said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles and The Nature Conservancy. “And we’re still a few months out from seeing the worst of things.”
Distinguished Professor Glen MacDonald, whose research at the University of California Los Angeles’ Department of Geography focuses on water resources and environmental impacts of climate change, said the size of the fires is of particular importance. “We’re not actually seeing a statistically significant increase in the number of fires — we’re just seeing that the ones that get going, some of them are much, much bigger,” he told Newsweek. On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced additional House committee assignments.
Congresswoman-elect Sara Jacobs (D-CA) was the only incoming House freshman named to the Foreign Affairs Committee. “I look forward to bringing my experience in U.S. foreign policy and international organizations — and my voice as a millennial who has never known a day in my adult life that the United States has not been at war — to the committee as we work to rebuild America’s standing in the world,” Jacobs told
Jewish Insider in a statement.
Congresswoman-elect Kathy Manning (D-NC) told JI last month that she was hoping to join Foreign Affairs. Instead, Manning was tapped for the Education and Labor Committee. Additional committee assignments are likely to be announced in January.
