Laos: Govt says 'Be vigilant, get vaccinated', people warned amid fears of new Covid-19 outbreak

VIENTIANE, April 13 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Authorities have warned members of the public to be more vigilant and to get vaccinated against the coronavirus as concern over a fresh outbreak of Covid-19 escalates.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune said there was a strong risk of a new outbreak of the virus in Laos.
Ongoing outbreaks in many countries around the world, especially new outbreaks in neighbouring countries, justify the fear of more infections in Laos.
“There is a strong risk that the outbreak could spread into Laos because people have become neglectful and careless, ignoring the guidelines laid down by the taskforce,” he said, referring to the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.

The decision was made after Laos recorded the first community infection in mid-April.
The committee asked the Health Ministry to continue tracing suspect cases and conduct vaccination as scheduled.
The Lao Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism was required to temporarily shut down entertainment areas, karaoke parlours and eateries during the remaining days of April.
According to the committee, all F1 cases having contact with the patient No.50 tested negative.

The blockage of the Suez Canal last month, the shortest shipping route between Europe and Asia, has once again urged Vietnamese agencies to rethink the pros and cons in development of the railway network to gain bigger future benefits.
Vietnam Railways (VNR) has been awaiting development of the new Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong railway route connecting to Lach Huyen International Gateway Seaport, which helps enhance connection in the East-West Corridor and between Vietnam and China.
VNR deputy director Phan Quoc Anh told VIR, “The project has remained on paper for months. We expect that the study will be fast-tracked so that we can tap into global growing trade. Many regional countries have developed their railway networks, while Vietnam’s remains in standstill.”

Laos govt urged to carry out further structural reform; records 2 new Covid-19 cases

VIENTIANE, April 12 (Vientiane Times/ANN): President Thongloun Sisoulith has instructed the government to further streamline the structure of ministry and provincial departments to improve the efficiency of administration.
The President gave the advice when addressing the first government meeting under the 9th legislature, which wrapped up on Friday.
Chaired by Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh, the two-day meeting took place following the inaugural session of the National Assembly (NA)’s 9th legislature last month, which approved the new cabinet members.
Thongloun said departments and divisions within ministries and provincial administrations needed to be reviewed and restructured, removing barriers that hinder the country’s development.

OHCHR | Lao PDR: Five years after arrest, human rights defenders still denied access to lawyers – UN expert

Lao PDR: Five years after arrest, human rights defenders still denied access to lawyers – UN expert
GENEVA (12 April 2021) – A UN expert called on the Government of Lao PDR to immediately release three human rights defenders who have been detained for more than five years, saying their continued imprisonment was an impediment to the advancement of human rights in the South-East Asian nation.
A court in the capital, Vientiane, sentenced Ms. Lodkham Thammavong, Mr. Soukane Chaithad and Mr. Somphone Phimmasone to prison terms of up to 30 years in 2017 after they took part in a demonstration outside the Lao Embassy in Thailand to express concerns over the government’s human rights record. The three, who were arrested in March 2016, had also posted messages on social media criticizing the Government.
