At least four ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirates broadcasted warnings Tuesday that they had lost control of their steering. It wasn't immediately clear what was happening off the coast of Fujairah in the Gulf of Oman, but British sources believe one of the vessels, the Asphalt Princess, has been hijacked and are "working on the assumption Iranian military or proxies boarded the vessel", the Times newspaper reported on Tuesday.

TOKYO - Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has announced she will retire in the wake of her groundbreaking appearance at the Tokyo Olympics this week.
The New Zealander, on Monday, contested the +87kg category weightlifting, in a debut the International Olympic Committee (IOC) described as the first appearance by an openly transgender woman at an Olympics.
While her appearance on sport's biggest stage was short-lived -- an "overwhelmed" Hubbard failed to complete a successful lift -- it was hailed by trans activists as a historic occasion for a marginalised community.

Getty Images
Dan Mullan / Getty

Bonkers NHS Trusts are admitting trans women sex offenders onto female-only hospital wards - this really is a bridge too far -- Society's Child -- Sott.net

Nurses prepare a bed on a ward at St Thomas' Hospital in central London Official advice to permit sex offenders who are trans women onto female-only hospital wards flies in the face of patient safety and common sense but woke NHS trusts have drunk the gender theory Kool-Aid without question.
Hit pause for a minute to consider the idea of allowing trans women sex offenders to be treated on the same female-only hospital wards as the more traditionally equipped XX chromosome crowd. Hands up, anyone thinks that's a good idea?
I know of no woman who does and I would be horrified if my wife or daughters were forced to share bed space with an adult-born male convicted of a sexual offence. For starters, the Department of Health's policy is that hospitals should provide single sex wards and it's hard to see why that should change.

City Kickboxing co-owner Doug Viney shared a post about transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard on Tuesday morning. The post has since been deleted.
Hubbard made history at the Tokyo Olympics this week as the first openly trans woman to compete at the Games.
She was eliminated from her super-heavyweight event after failing to lift the required weights at her first three attempts.
A screenshot of Viney's post was shared to social media, where several Twitter users expressed their disdain and said they reported the post for hate speech.
City Kickboxing trainer Mike Angove said the post was "mistakenly worded".

Auckland streetwear company owner criticised for post about transgender Olympic weightlifter

After journalist David Farrier posted about Hodge’s posts on Twitter, Hodge issued an apology via his Instagram stories.
On Twitter, Farrier said Hodge’s comments were a gentle reminder that trans hatred was “very real” in New Zealand.
“I just wanted to address an Instagram post I made the other day. I made some hurtful comments about Laurel Hubbard in my Insta story and David Farrier picked up on that.
“I appreciate David’s work, I’ve always followed him. I am not anti-trans by any means. I’m still coming to terms with the element of unfairness you see due to the natural biological advantages,” Hodge said.

Trans Athlete Bombs Out in Women's Olympic Weightlifting, Which Proves Nothing

A trans athlete who goes by the name Laurel Hubbard (formerly Gavin Hubbard) failed to earn a medal in women’s Olympic weightlifting on Monday morning after missing three consecutive snatches in the super-heavyweight competition. “Laurel,” who was born a male and lived as a male for 35 years, underwent treatments to make him more like a female seven years ago. In other words, Hubbard had male levels of testosterone coursing through his veins for three and a half decades, giving him lifelong physical advantages over his female competitors.
(Aside: I don’t play semantic games with gender pronouns. When using masculine pronouns, I am referring to an individual born male, with male DNA.)

TOKYO (Reuters) - At 43, New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard is nearly twice the average age of her Tokyo 2020 competitors. Having shifted 285 kg in qualifying, she is also one of the strongest in the field.
On Monday she will become the first openly transgender athlete to compete in an Olympics, and her participation has been as divisive an issue as whether the Games should have even gone ahead during a global pandemic.

TOKYO — Before Athing Mu introduced herself to the world at the Tokyo Games, the public-address announcer at Olympic Stadium butchered her name.
It was Friday, before her opening round heat of the women’s 800 meters, and Mu did not hide her dismay.
“I’m sure everyone saw my face,” said Mu, a 19-year-old American whose name is pronounced “Ah-THING Moe.”
“I don’t even know what he said, but it was terrible. Like, where do you even get that from?”
Mu said all this with a charming, disarming smile — she was used to people getting her name wrong, she said, but it also seemed clear that she wanted some respect. So she went out and made sure to earn it as an Olympic gold medalist.

Hubbard was born male and competed in weightlifting at junior level. She transitioned eight years ago, resumed weightlifting and became eligible for the Games under a 2015 International Olympic Committee consensus allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s events.
But her landmark appearance in Monday’s competition lasted just 10 minutes, with each of her first three efforts in the snatch ruled no lifts.

As far as crowds go, it was the biggest yet at Tokyo 2020.
It was the night of the women's final in the 87+ kilo class weightlifting at the Tokyo International Forum.
According to news site insidethegames.biz, media seats in the venue were oversubscribed by 300 per cent.
In the build up there had been plenty written, perhaps only outdone by the number of abusive social media posts by those who object to the inclusion of transgender women, despite fulfilling a strict set of policy requirements determined by the IOC and the International Weightlifting Federation.

I am so impressed with the way Laurel Hubbard conducted herself last night
Set aside the fact that she shouldn’t be competing at the Olympics because of the unfairness to cis gender women, you’ve got to be impressed with her resilience.
That must’ve been so hard for her; the entire world has been debating whether her inclusion is fair.
She must’ve known that. She hinted that she did. She would’ve known her some of her competitors had spoken out publicly against her inclusion, and according to the New York times, there were a few jeers from the crowd when she walked on stage last night. She might’ve heard that.

New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has been hailed as a transgender pioneer after her short-lived Olympic debut but Games chiefs continue to wrestle with the thorny issues raised by her historic appearance.
Hubbard's much-anticipated medal bid in the +87kg category ended in anti-climatic fashion at the Tokyo International Forum on Monday when she was eliminated after botching her opening three lifts.
The 43-year-old later admitted she was "overwhelmed" during her moment in the spotlight, which was described by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the first appearance by an openly transgender woman at an Olympics.

TOKYO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - The Olympics governing body was probing Belarus's treatment of an athlete seeking refuge, while Norway's Karsten Warholm demolished a world record and Simone Biles was set for a highly anticipated return to the gymnastics stage in Tokyo on Tuesday.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it expected a report https://www.reuters.com/article/olympics-2020-ioc/update-1-olympics-ioc-awaiting-report-from-belarusian-olympic-committee-idUSL8N2PA0F4 later in the day from the Belarusian team on the case of sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya, who sought protection https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/belarus-athlete-in-hands-authorities-ioc-2021-08-02 in the Polish embassy in Tokyo on Monday after refusing her team's orders to fly home.

Hubbard contested the +87kg category in a groundbreaking move that Olympic chiefs says makes the Games more inclusive but critics fear will undermine women’s sport.
After months of anticipation, the historic appearance lasted less than an hour as all three of the 43-year-old’s snatch attempts failed.
