Best Summer Ever, a musical that was produced and shot in Vermont by Zeno Mountain Farm, a Lincoln nonprofit that runs retreats and camps for people with and without disabilities.
Directed by Michael Parks Randa and Lauren Smitelli, the movie features Hollywood talent in front of and behind the camera. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, who have a home in Vermont, show up in cameos as TV journalists and count among several celebrity executive producers.

The opening musical number in “Best Summer Ever” ends with a kiss between protagonists Sage (Shannon DeVido) and Tony (Rickey Wilson Jr.), who fall in love at a sleepaway dance camp in Vermont. Executive producer Will Halby said he shared a realization with his crew while filming this scene.
“I turned to our directors and said, ‘I don’t think that this is something that has ever been put on film before,’” Halby said.
What’s unprecedented here is that Sage is in a wheelchair and is played by an actress who herself is in a wheelchair. In fact, it’s the first musical to star people with disabilities and the first SAG-registered movie in which more than half the cast and crew are disabled.

Imagine a world where people with disabilities didn't have to talk about their disabilities. A world where they're just people.
That's the big takeaway from "Best Summer Ever," (available now on DVD and on-demand) a musical rom-com in the same vein as "Grease," "High School Musical" and "Footloose" that features a mixed cast of people with and without disabilities.
The feel-good film stars Shannon DeVido ("Difficult People," "Insatiable") and Rickey Wilson, Jr. as its romantic leads, Sage and Tony. The pair meet at a summer dance camp before going their separate ways, only to end up at the same high school where their worlds collide in a chaotic but ultimately cathartic fashion. And of course, songs help tell the story.

“Best Summer Ever” is a high school musical. It isn’t “High School Musical” — it’s better. Tender and exuberant, it includes set pieces modeled on “Footloose” and “Grease,” and feels closer to those films in spirit than to the Disney Channel. This is the kind of movie that vibrates with the energy of the people who made it, whose enthusiasm radiates from the screen. The actors and filmmakers seemed to have had an extremely good time bringing “Best Summer Ever” to life. Watching it made me happy.

ZENO MOUNTAIN FARM'S “Best Summer Ever” was filmed in Lincoln, Bristol and Mount Abraham Union High School. Here is a scene from the musical that closed down Main Street in Bristol for a whole night.
“BEST SUMMER EVER,” written and produced by a team at Zeno Mountain Farm in Lincoln screened at the South by Southwest virtual festival this year. The feature-length musical will be released for the public on April 27, with a pre-release special screening and Q&A session on April 23, at 8 p.m. Tickets are available through zenomountainfarm.org.
