Entire waterfront is really the modern way of looking at development, as well as space activation which, as you know is one of the things were trying to do at the wharf in the publics face. Anyway, that is why am here today. Thank you, diane, and commissioners of the port. Thank you. Alice walters. Good afternoon. I am trying desperately. [inaudible] i am here wearing two hats. We had the pleasure of having diane, and half present the waterfront plan update last night, to our community. I have to say, being able to present, they really focus on the goals and the values of the plan doing that was a conjunction with the runup of the rfps, the first of which are going to be in our subarea. Really brought the plan home to the community, so that they can understand what all of those hundreds of recommendations actually meant on the ground to them. I think it was incredibly valuable for the community, and it also, the three years, i think, that you all invested in really paid off. The commun ....
All right, senator burr suggests maybe we should make a wait a few minutes for other members to come back from recess. Lets take a quick recess here. Its create cal we continue to have these hearings to do everything we can to hold v. A. s feet to the fire and make sure that accountability is there. We know some things now that we did not know at the last hearing. We know for a fact that v. A. s wait list manipulation and access to care issues is, in fact, systemic. Report after report has confirmed this. In fact, 77 facilities are currently under investigation by the v. A. Inspector general. Its an astounding number. And i believe the scheduling problems are the tip of the iceberg. Now we have allegations of whistle blower retaliation and mproper payment of claims. The cancer doesnt seem to stop, but it must be stopped. While i appreciate your efforts , secretary gibson, i think you have done some things, and they are recognized and acknowledged. But i think wed all acknowledge theres ....
The needs of veterans. I asked previous secretary for how can i help. What tools dont you have to solve this problem with no response sn again, if there is changes in the law and programs that are necessary it encourage loan forgiveness or whatever would help you attract professionals, i would like to be an ally. Heres my scenario of a couple of stories. Lee mann is a veteran. I mentioned him in opening remarks. He had the fortune of the va calling him to tell him he no longer needed to drive four hours to nebraska from kansas to have a colonoscopy. Thats the good news. That suggested that there is change afoot. Thank you. Down the road, about an hour in plainville, kansas, Larry Mcintyre said he drove three hours to wichita to get a cortizone shot in his shoulder. He goes several times a week for other minor procedures. There is a sea bot within 25 miles, but they dont have the capabilities as i understand it of providing cortizo ....
But what could be more pressing than to make sure our veterans receive the care that they need and deserve . Thank you, mr. Chairman. Other members will be filtering back. But i would like to hear from the acting secretary now. And customarily, we give five minutes, but youll have more time. This is a serious discussion, and we want you to have the time you need to make your case, and we want the members here to have the time they need to ask you the questions. All right, senator burr suggested maybe we should wait a few minutes to make sure all the members come back. Lets take a very quick recess here. Okay. Lets reconvene, and senator, i think were up to you and your Opening Statement. Thank you, senator chairman sanders and Ranking Member burr for convening another very important hearing to address the issues at the v. A. Its critical that we continue to have these over ....
