Highland Park's Remember Garden blossoms | News | CITY News. Arts. Life.

PHOTO BY NOELLE E. C. EVANS
Volunteers via United Way s early session of the Day of Caring clean up the garden beds of the Remember Garden at Highland Park this past Thursday.
With spring in bloom at Highland Park, volunteers are beautifying one garden bed that serves as a living memorial to hundreds of people whose remains were discovered in an unmarked mass grave.
Among them is Gillian Conde, vice president of DePaul, a nonprofit organization that provides support services and housing for people with special needs, including mental illness.  As she and others clean up the garden, she plans a tiny periwinkle vinca vine next to a wooden bench.

MEETING CANDID — Iris Craig, right, first vice president of the Wintersville Woman’s Club, introduced guest speaker Sherrie Dunlevy as the March meeting presenter.

WINTERSVILLE Author, speaker and Aging Awesomely coach Sherrie Dunlevy was the guest presenter for the Wintersville Woman’s Club’s first gathering in months since COVID-19 concerns shut down the normal rhythm of groups meeting routinely.
And that seemed fitting, given the Wheeling woman’s program “Designing A Life You Love” was one she developed during the pandemic and had done virtually. For the club’s March meeting, however, it was her first time to deliver the message in person.

Today in history: Meijer building plans definite, but not timing

March 15, 1931
Between 50 and 60 of the unemployed men of Cadillac have been given work in the city snow removal crews this week, according to George Johnston, city manager. Not that many have worked all week, however, as the city manager shared the work instead of having a smaller permanent crew. Quite a number of streets had to be shoveled out, the snow being too deep and heavy for the plows. Today a crew was working on Paluster Street. Every state road is now open and widened out so that traffic is safe, A.L. Burridge, division engineer, said today. The pavement south from Fife Lake is practically bare. State crews are now floating the gravel roads. The county crew encountered considerable trouble on the Meauwataka Road but have now passed the worst place and expects to have it all open some time this afternoon. The other double-header outfit was working on old U.S. 131 and it was expected this would be open tonight.
