Evictionism - LRC Blog

Evictionism
Hi Walter,
Huge fan. I’ve embraced the evictionism philosophy and share it’s libertarian merits with both left and right zealots across the prolife/prochoice divide.
Just read your open letter to Georgia libertarians. I currently live in GA. I voted for Shane. I also would have voted for a Libertarian Presidential candidate over Trump if we had one worth voting for which we haven’t had since Badnarik. I honestly don’t remember if I even voted for a presidential candidate in 2008 or 2012.
Anyway, I wanted to say that implying that those of us who voted for Shane owe everyone a moral debt to support Perdue and Loeffler. In the great words of our fake pres-elect, “come on, man!”    I don’t think implying an obligation to vote a certain way or even to vote at all is going to resonate with many thick libertarians. The argument sounds too much like my mom convincing me to vote for Dole in 96 for which I had to close my eyes to do and still look back on with embarrassment.

Voluntary Slavery and Libertarianism

Voluntary Slavery and Libertarianism
Subject:
I read an article but I believe you wrote about slavery saying that if you agreed to be someone’s slave it was okay especially in the terms of money for medical procedure for your child the problem I have with it is a whole idea of slavery is against free will nobody goes into slavery with their own free will there always forced to buy some means that’s where I disagree with you and don’t get me wrong I’m a 40 year old white male who in my tire life has never met a Slave and honestly believe that most people who’s ancestors were brought over slaves are much happier in this country Dan their ancestors Origins me personally I am descended from Scottish and Irish which two was brought to this country in a form of slavery and I feel nobody owes me anything because I was never a Slave both of my parents were drug addicts and drunks so I never got the benefit of having a good parent to help me through life get started whatever and I still struggle day today but it’s nobody else’s fault but maybe there’s and my own I have accomplished more I don’t understand the idea of white privilege because if you hire a person based on his color and not his ability you’re doing wrong whether you believe there’s enough black people working at a job versus white or not and I think you understand what I’m saying that I’m not going to explain it further and if this is not the person that wrote it please excuse my ignorance cuz this is the best I can find and would appreciate if you could direct me to the correct person and if by some chance you actually read this I will definitely be interested in a response

Lawyers have concluded their 1st day of opening arguments in the Senate impeachment trial insisting that the Democrats are trying to overturn the results of the 2016 election and that the investigations of Mr Trump's dealings with Ukraine have not been a fact finding mission but a politically motivated effort to force him out of the White House we get a report from a peace agreement Ghani over the 1st hour of a rare Saturday Senate session the lawyers focused on what they say was the president appropriately urging Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden the president did absolutely nothing wrong the president did absolutely nothing wrong the evidence is actually really overwhelming. News dot com Gene Randall v.o.a. News. From Washington the away present issues in the news. Welcome to issues in a new on the panel this week the hall t.c. Foreign affairs correspondent for Politico Richard Lodge in dress correspondent for the t.v. a New valve on the job and a moderate who is a famous school in Washington correspondent on 24 news. Welcome everyone I'm shameless Dylan and here are the issues we're going to cover impeachment the trial against u.s. President gets underway for only the 3rd time in American history and peace in the Middle East the White House is finally expected to roll out their big peace plan Hi guys nice to see you not all Richard lovely to have you here on a cold wintry day I see we've got to start with impeachment obviously that is the biggest news of the week I will start with you know how it's been a long week it feels like this week has been a month but what stood out to you in several days of impeachment coverage Well obviously the thing about the milk right I mean the fact that the senators are only allowed 2 things that they can drink and these proceedings and that's water and milk I have a slightly kidding know what stood out to me I guess I would say that Adam shifts opening presentation really was scathing and harsh and eloquent to the point where even Lindsey Graham a staunch Republican defender of President Tropp told him he did a good job and isn't it interesting because Adam Schiff tends to rub Republicans the wrong way but he got praise from that's right I mean even the ones who you already know they're going to vote to not convict President Trump they think that he was pretty good out there and now that being said yeah he apparently recently said that he feels like he's introducing himself to a bunch of senators and one of the most interesting things that somebody said was just in a my. Asked the now independent former Republican who does support impeaching Trump and he said that he feels like this whole week like people like shift and others who have been laying out the case that he said that he's pretty sure many of his Republican colleagues that it's the 1st time they've actually listened right because he's the basic facts because everybody is watching News from their preferred cable network Richard and by the way to to point about the milk in the water I actually I was in the Senate chamber yesterday watching from the president Larry and there were several senators chewing gum furiously So I think I might be a loophole here something I don't actually eat sushi if did a really good job I think even Republicans are saying that but there was a misstep in the beginning a misstep with Jerry not lawyer who attacked Republican senators who were voting with the Democrats on some of the amendments to the ground rules and he said the fact that they're not voting with the Democrats on those they're engaging in a cover up and that seemed to offend even the moderates that the Democrats are trying to reach out to trying to convince So do you think that hurt the Democrats cause Well I think that obviously it shocked even the chief justice John Roberts who's presiding over the session I think in the end I believe it will have this impact of just solo the firing the Republican position that what is presented is fundamentally biased it's interesting to me that as much as what stood out was how strong Adam Shift initial presentation was I was not surprised but I I am not sure that this way of hammering every details that we heard last fall during the House hearings will have a the impact the or the outcome they expect from the Republican senator So to answer your question I feel that during Adler's comment Harden what was already a not very open receptive audience on the Republican side and add to this even if Adam Schiff said there's a method to our madness when he was gone. Going back to every small details of what we heard last fall I have the impression it's just going to take the last bit of openness or the locals the last aspect of openness from the Republicans to any way of considering this impeachment these impeachment arguments yes so it's not as if they were he was speaking to necessarily a very welcoming Republican audience but it did it did annoy Lisa Lisa Murkowski is one of the moderate Republicans look the senators look pretty bored even the Democrats it's the same point almost being hammered as you said over and over and over again and now the Democrats also know that at the end of this he's going to be acquitted I mean Trump is going to be acquitted barring some bombshell and even if there is a bombshell likely Republicans will stick with the president so why go through all of this this might sound crazy go for it and I'm I'm not saying that this is definitely what they're doing but look maybe they just are thinking about the history books and doing the right thing and getting this on the record you know yeah they're hammering every detail but that goes into the Congressional Record and one day in the future people are going to look back at this crazy day and age and want to know exactly how it went and so maybe that's that's one thing they're thinking and you know they're also they're also no doubt thinking about their own base and their own political futures and November and so you know I'm sure that there are plenty of people who find this whole thing boring that it doesn't have enough to zags or whatever but there are others who are riveted I was in a cab the other night and I was at the driver was listening to the impeachment proceedings and I was like wow you're really listening to that and he said Well yeah because in my country we don't have this sort of thing and I was like What are you talking about his eye and he was from China and he was just saying he's an asylum seeker here and he was saying that they just don't have the sort of open system they don't have this type of thing where you can find out what these lawmakers are thinking and to him it was just fascinating and so that kind of was a reminder to me that. Didn't get so worked up about things like because I was I think also I believe just the way you're implying a how that in the future maybe even shorter short term it'll be a way to go back to the so-called moderates on the Republican side and say Ok we had a strong case and still you could not acknowledge anything you voted like a sheep with all the other ones with the line that came from the White House or the Republican leadership I think it's going to be something that will come up could be next election could be in 2 years and a half from now so I think that's one thing however just to to add to the comment of your driver I worried that the Noffs of Americans over there are also trying to reach by again really explaining what they found out of the hearings in the house I think it's just going to be perceived as I've been afraid it's going to be perceived as the Democrats getting into the smallest little thing trying to find something even if they present this as a major threat to the Constitution of the country the security of the country it's going to be I'm afraid when you get so into the details it's going to be seen as they were looking at every possible way to go after this president who in the end was elected which brings us to the Republican defense they are challenging the result of the 2016 action not sure that it's going to be the famous Obama electorate moving to do trump side you don't think this is going to convince some of the American public that's watching and it is interesting because they have to speak both sides really have to speak but more the Democrats because they are prosecuting they have to speak to so many different audiences like nomination they have to speak to the history books to how this is perceived years from now they also have to speak to moderate Republicans and they have to speak to the American public and of course on Saturday when they wrap up the Republicans get their chance the president's legal team gets their chance to defend the president what is their defense going to be in a while back. Well I think a lot of it's going to be about process about claiming that this whole situation has been unfair the Democrats haven't really given a chance for Trump and his supporters to present their case although there's some irony with that and you know that they're going to basically claim that there's a number of things well for one thing they'll say like even if this happened it's not a big enough deal to remove a president from office especially so close to an election I mean there's a number of defenses that they're going to run through but I do think it's really important to remember that you know when you were talking about why are the Democrats getting into the weeds and I think it's partly because one of the Republican defenses so far when they go out and they talk to reporters they're like we're not hearing anything new there's nothing bad there's nothing there and so the Democrats are trying to say look like here are like 50 things we've laid out how can you say there's nothing there but I do think that there's nothing there is definitely going to be an ongoing defense of the Republicans now what's the irony the irony is that they have voted against or tried to stop the introduction of additional evidence and there's a lot of science that they're not going to stand up for the ability to call witnesses witnesses that President Trump himself has blocked from testifying and so the question then is if you guys want more details why don't you allow these witnesses to come and what are you afraid of right and that is what Chuck Schumer has been saying again and again in front of the cameras Chuck Schumer loves to talk in front of cameras but this is his perfect way to do it he has a good reason to now politicians love Doc and kids like a sunflower press the sun and it really does glow but what is one of the arguments also that you have been hearing from the legal team and on this matter of witnesses is and really this to this 2nd article of impeachment which is struction of Congress is that there was an obstruction of Congress because the House Democrats didn't exhaust every option they did not go to the courts to subpoena the witnesses these witnesses like John Bolton so why should the Senate. Due their job for them and I think it's a strong argument if even if we go with the Democrats saying well if we had gone to courts it would have extended the entire process probably over the 2020 presidential election that's probably true but in the end it's easy to make this even simplified argument of saying well the minute of the Senate is to consider what came out of the House impeachment inquiry I do not judge the quality of whatever was done and not done from the house but they can easily limit whatever they say on this point so that's why again I think the obstruction of justice is a Congress yes a structure of Congress is going to be an interesting argument to defend in front of the senators because it's perceived as the weakest of the 2 article of it of impeachment I believe that the defense starting on Saturday and the president to tornadoes are going to say that they're going to try to diminish the value of the entire process and minimize the strength of the whole thing by saying even in the house the didn't go after this we can say that the courts would have extended the end I think but in the end it's easy to understand I think just to go back to what I was trying to except to say about getting into the nitty gritty of the inquiry and the happen in the House is that I do certain moment people want to a summary Ok so what is the main thing I feel that the way the president's defense is going to come out is to say listen this is a simple as this he's doing his job they're trying to stop him from doing his job that was the president way of behaving is a perch or better is a different type of political leader and I think if not everybody definitely not on the Democratic side but the electorate Republican electorate will exactly understand what they want to hear live easy so it's much easier for them to have a simple sound bites because they can just say all of this is you know nonsense the president and that's nothing wrong and the Democrats are out to get the president but the Democrats actually. Have to present all of this evidence which can get repetitive but I want to zoom out for a minute now since you are a foreign affairs correspondent This involves another country but 2 countries really Ukraine and Russia how do you think they're perceiving all of this well I think the Ukrainians are extremely concerned about the long term damage it's going to do to their relationship with the United States they already have been worried I mean their government is pretty young it's trying to root out corruption and it really relies heavily on hundreds of millions of dollars and financial assistance that the u.s. Provides to fight Russia and so they're concerned I think the Russians are probably delighting in the chaos that this is causing this that's always what they delight in is cast in the United States All right let us go to break when we come back we're going to dig into impeachment and peace plan which is not complicated at all art We'll see you on the other side of the break issues in the news is coming to you from the Voice of America in Washington and if you would like to download the program it's free on i Tunes Just click on the i Tunes tab on our website at v.o.a. News dot com While you're there check out our other programs Press Conference USA and encounter also visit us on Facebook and to leave a comment or 2 then like us at current affairs with Carol Castillo Now back to our panel now Paul to see foreign affairs correspondent for Politico Richard Martin dress correspondent for t.v. a New Bell Canada and our moderator. Washington correspondent for 24 news. Ok we are back not all Richard No I just I stopped you really in the middle of your point on Russia and Ukraine so before we get to the peace plan if you want to continue that thought that was basically I mean just this this idea that you know the Russians are going to delight in the chaos at the same time you know if the Republicans are making the argument that now is not the time to remove a president from office so close to an auction you could argue that on a. Geo political front that's a good point right I mean if you keep the president in office like the Republicans want that does to some degree add a measure of stability and that could throw other countries like the Russians off their game a tad if he if present trends Textron not to mention that President Trump is reelected as many other countries believe he will be you report for Canada Richard how are the Canadians viewing this how is the rest of the world other than Ukraine and Russia viewing this I think they're very much interested in the outcome of this impeachment trial do people in Canada in particular remember perfectly well I mean the older ones a little bit what happened with Clinton 21 years ago and there's a lot of sympathy for Clinton I think they see this the importance of the impeachment process Donald Trump is not popular in Canada and it's perceived as a way to underlined again what the president as done in exaggerating the use of his presidential power so in the end I think it's being followed people are interested in what is happening and mainly they I think the understand that the outcome is already known but if they see this as the constant movement within the u.s. Society to challenge the way the president is managing go down from his managing the presidency and they like it in Canada can you Canada has like the most lovely little scandals Isn't there something about donuts recently and I was just you guys are so lucky you know when you know that yeah you know that when you argue about the amount of donuts you bought in the price you pay for them we don't have major problems there is a donut gate Ok so sort of sticking with impeachment but moving to another subject is the president announced that Benjamin Netanyahu Israel's prime minister and Benny Gantz Netanyahu was main political rival that they have been invited to the White House or to Washington to discuss the peace plan although it was a little strange 1st you had pence inviting that you know. He's in Israel and then you had the White House putting out the statement that the 2 men are going to come to the water to Washington discussion national security issues and then the president tweeting out and saying any details that have been reported are just speculation and then telling reporters actually we're going to put out the peace plan in the next couple of days now what's your read on that and the way they sort of rolled out look messaging has never been the trumpet ministration strong suit I mean generally they're just often not able to coordinate very well and the president himself is a key factor in that because of his Twitter prowess that being said you know it does sound like they will reveal the 2nd half of the political half Jared questioners peace plan for the Middle East and from what we're hearing it's very very very pro Israel I mean let's not forget the people who are not invited to the store apparently are not going to show up at least are the Palestinians and so it's very posed at the same time you know and it's also sort of a take it or leave it type of thing it's like you know here's the plan it's not about negotiating you take it you leave it Israel's going to control a ton of territory the Palestinians are not going to get a full fledged state so these are the outlines that we're hearing and look you could argue that this is a nonstarter it's dead on arrival a lot of people argue that but at the same time there are some really hard truths that this administration says that it is laying out there about Middle East peace for instance this idea that they're not going to give the right of return to the sentence of every Palestinian who is ever displaced the idea that the Palestinians they you know that they're not going to get as much as what they want in Jerusalem and the Jerusalem is Israel's capital there they are making statements that I'm confident a lot of positive ministrations knew that eventually they would have to make but they weren't willing to do so and they were just saying well the Palestinians and Israelis have to work it out so look you could argue that it's like really stupid for them to do this because this is not going to go anywhere on the other hand they've sort of set a new a new tone and I wouldn't be surprised if down the line you see future administrations build on that to something. Then for instance my understanding is that Democrats if they win the presidency they're not going to move the u.s. Embassy back to tell of you from Jerusalem so that's something that they've you know the administration has basically kind of carved in stone so right there the thinking from the peace team seems to be other administrations have tried this sort of you know dancing around the issues approach we're not going to do that anymore because it has gotten no one anywhere so here's the reality of the situation Jerusalem is Israel's capital that's where that's our starting point let's move on from that the Palestinians have already come out and said that any details that have been released or reported on they reject all of it and they're issuing a red line to Israel and to the United States don't cross that red line but the president did say that he spoke we've spoken briefly with the Palestinians and Richard any chance the Palestinians come onboard this plan I don't think so of the president claims as you're saying on the plane flying to Florida that you talked or somebody had talked to the Palestinians and any expected them to react negatively but it's a very and I had to quote him a very positive plan for them more all very skeptical but again I think it's obvious that this administration has taken a strong and hard position against the person leadership and as much as we'd like to find me a solution that would please. The emissions I would like or hopefully to find a solution that please both sides they have this decided to just charge toward something different I recognize the is rarely sovereignty on the Golan adopt a favorable position to Israel on the settlements all these and exactly what was said earlier to so the idea that even Benny Gantz he had said the was going to come and now it's not totally sure but they said the leader of the opposition in Israel himself would show up at the White House with been many eminent on Yahoo the prime minister and the 2 of them India and agreeing that this process and. What is being suggested corresponds to what in the end the entire Israeli society agrees with or pretty huge majority of the Israeli society agrees with shows that I feel this administration can easily not give any thought 2nd thought to how the Palestinian will react because they have the Israeli on their side I have the impression that the Arabs in the region are not showing any anger towards this initiative or let's let's touch on that for a 2nd because 2 things and those are good points you bring up the 2 things 1st of all I think the administration says that they tried with the Palestinians in the beginning they met with Abbas and that they felt rebuffed but you know everybody can interpret this the way they want but on the issue of the Arab states it does seem like Arab states especially because Iran has sort of become the central issue of the Middle East that they are moving closer to the president and to Israel so how does that sort of fit into this peace plan Oh I mean it's very much a downer for the Palestinians you know they can always rely on the Arab countries to stand up for them and now not so much when you have Saudi Arabia and the Emirates thinking to themselves you know we're tired of this Palestinian issue we're way war concerned about Iran and dealing with Iran means we need to coordinate with Israel you know it's very much realpolitik in the long run I think especially after the recent events of this year like a lot number of the Arab countries are thinking look we need to find a way to make peace with Iran and so perhaps down the line the Palestinian issue could become once again a flashpoint for them I don't know anything is possible I will say one other thing 11 movement it's a small movements but you know it's it's has some Palestinian adherence is idea of having a one state solution down the line one state with equal rights and number of Palestinians increasingly have come to believe that the 2 state model just wouldn't have worked and that should be one state but they should have equal rights not an apartheid state which they say is effectively what they have right now and that is a movement you could see grow now of course that raises questions about whether. Israel can survive as a majority Jewish state but right and that's the question Can it be a majority Jewish state and be a democracy correct if things sort of remain in the status quo I want to focus on the timing and the connection to impeachment Richard because this is being rolled out while the president is on trial do you think that's a coincidence or do you think that's intentional I think it's intentional I think again during the last trip the president made to a Florida you underlined the fact that he would love to make this deal this is known as the hardest deal to make and I love making a deal I quote him more toward as we say in French and so 1st I really believe that he wants to show how a dealmaker Supremes the old maker he is and in this case while its presence is being undermined by this impeachment process it would be a way to show to show off to show he is in control add to this invites Prime Minister Netanyahu and the leader of the opposition of the White House on Tuesday Tuesday being the day because if it is a torn is is defense team does not use the time they have the president's attorney the president's attorneys during the impeachment trial in the Senate they have 3 days Saturday Monday and Tuesday and they are giving signs that they're not going to use their entire time brings us choose day where the questions the Senate of questions and then what kind of attention are we going to give to whatever happens in the Senate if the president comes up with his plan with the 2 Israeli leaders and a big event at the White House in the Rose Garden or nice Droom it becomes something that will definitely and finally for him suck the attention away from the impeachment process and brings it back to him but it could end up being a debacle if Gaunts doesn't shock salute and Netanyahu comes if the plan is derided including by the international community and then everybody is like Look you're doing this just to boost Netanyahu right before his election it could end up getting a lot and it's a big. Absolutely So clearly both of you very positive you think everything is going to work out we're going to have peace in the Middle East that is all the time we have thanks to you know how to see foreign affairs correspondent for Politico and Richard correspondent for t.v. a Novella Canada this program is produced by v.o.a. United States President Donald Trump became the 1st Us president to attend the yearly March for Life demonstration on the National Mall in Washington d.c. The March for Life movement started in the 1970 s. Italian scientists reported this week that the volcanic explosion not only killed one person but turned the victim's brain material into glass this is the 1st time that scientists have found that a volcanic eruption produced such an effect officials at the Herc you Lamia archaeology dig reported the finding in the New England Journal of Medicine Mt Vesuvius erupted almost 2000 years ago in the year 79 the eruption killed people in the nearby cities of Pompei and Herculaneum the remains of a man lying on a wooden bed were discovered in Herculaneum in the 1960 s. He is believed to have been the custodian or caretaker of a place of worship the Collegio August Alia at Herculaneum a report describing the discovery noted that archaeologists rarely find brain tissue in ancient human remains when they do the tissue is usually smooth a team led by Paolo patro knee examined the man's remains. Petrone is with Federico said condo University in Naples he and his team discovered that the victim's brain matter had been vitrified vitrification is a process by which tissue is burned at a high heat and turned into glass a study of burned wood found near the remains suggested that the heat reached temperatures as high as $520.00 degrees Celsius a sudden drop in temperatures followed the burst of extreme heat which vitrified the brain material the report said the resulting mass found in the victim's chest bones is also unique among other archaeological sites the report said The finding could be compared with victims of more recent historic events like the fire bombing of the German cities Dresden and Hamburg in World War 2 I am John Russell. To day we answer a question from Vietnam how can I improve my English listening skill. The. First thank you for writing and asking your question it may help to know that there are 3 kinds of listening most of our listening is done person to person or face to face you can see the other person and ask questions if you do not understand what is being said. This is called interactive listening at other times one listens for information like an announcement coming from a loudspeaker at a train station what train is leaving now and from which train platform or gate if you just hear the names of cities where the train will stop you might have the information you need this is selective listening today we talk about these 2 forms of listening next time we will talk about the 3rd kind of listening used in learning it is called intensive listening in face to face conversations some things are helpful 1st the person with the information you need is right in front of you you can ask the speaker to slow down or stop them and ask questions if you do not understand stop the other person and ask and you explain this you may ask would you please speak more slowly when the other person finishes speaking say what you think about the Subject this will help to show the other person you understand when you need to get information from an announcement think 1st of what you will hear at a train station the announcer often identifies the train by a number the announcer also says where the train is going the platform it is leaving from and the time it will be for the announcement may sound like this train $849.00 to Washington is leaving from platform b. To at 10 o'clock listen for the information you need. When you hear the city you want listen carefully and you will probably hear the gate number and that's ask a teacher I'm jel Robbins. Thanks . Love of life. By Jack London. Part 3. The man had brought his gun half the distance to his shoulder before he realized what he was doing he lowered it and drew his hunting knife from its cover before him was meat and life he ran his finger along the edge of the knife. It was sharp The point was sharp he would throw himself on the bear and kill it but his heart began its pounding then came its wild leap and he began to feel faint his wild courage was replaced and I had great fear in his weakness what if the animal attacked him he drew himself up tall grasping the knife and staring hard at the bear the bear advanced a couple of steps and stood up if the man ran the bear would run after him but the man did not run he was alive now with the courage of fear the bear moved away to one side with a threatening noise he himself was fearful of the strange creature that appeared unafraid but the man did not move he stood still until the danger was past then he yielded to a fit of trembling and sang to his knees on the wet grass. He regained control of himself and then started to move forward afraid now in a new manner it was not a fear that he would die from lack of food use afraid that he would be destroyed by forces other than starving it was the wolves across the wasteland their house could be heard making the air itself a threat most real to him now and again the wolves in groups of 2 and 3 crossed his path but they stayed away from him they were not in sufficient numbers to attack and besides they were hunting carob. Caribou did not battle while this strange creature that walked on 2 legs might bite in the afternoon and came upon scattered bones where the wolves had made a kill what remained had been a young caribou an hour before he started the bones clean of any flash they were still pink with a life in them which had not yet. Right he looked like that for the day was done was this life a fleeting thing without meaning it was only life that pain there was no hurt and death to die was to sleep it meant rest and why was he not content to die but he did not think about these things for very long he was soon seated in the grass a bone in his mouth biting at the bit of life that made it yet pink the sweet meaty taste drove him mad he closed his teeth firmly on the bones sometimes it was the bone that broke sometimes his teeth then he crushed the bones between the rocks he pounded them into tiny pieces and ate them. He was in such a hurry that he pounded his fingers to he felt surprised that the fact that his fingers did not hurt much when they were caught under the rock then came frightful days of snow and rain you did not know when he made camp and when he broke camp you travelled in the night as much as in the day you rested whenever he fell moving ahead whenever the dying life in him started up again he was a man no longer struggled it was the life in him unwilling to die that drove him on he did not suffer know feel pain but his mind was filled with hallucinations and wild dreams but he still ate the crushed bones of the young caribou which he had gathered and carried with him he crossed no more hills but followed a large stream which flowed through a wide valley he did not see this stream know this valley he saw nothing except hallucinations one morning he awaken with his mind clear lying on his back on a rocky surface the sun was shining bright and warm far away he heard the noises made by the young care of. It remembered rain and wind and snow but whether he had been beaten by the storm for 2 days or 2 weeks he did not know for some time he lay without movement the friendly sun poured down upon him and filled his body with its warmth a fine day he thought perhaps he could succeed in locating him. By a painful effort he rolled on his side. Below him float a wide river its unfamiliarity puzzled him slowly he followed it with his eyes as it curved among the bare hills they were more barren lower than any hills he had yet seen slowly without excitement he followed the course of the strange stream toward the skyline and saw that it emptied into a bright and shining sea he was still an excited most unusual he thought it was probably a trick of his mind he was certain of this when he also saw a ship floating in the shining sea close desires for a while then opened them it was strange how the sight continued Yet it was not strange he knew there were no sees or ships in the middle of this land as he had known there was no cartridge in the empty gun he heard a known as behind him it seemed like a dry a sound that comes from the throat when errors forced down in a car very slowly because of his weakness and stiffness you rolled to his other side he could see nothing near but he waited patiently and again came the car and there between 2 rocks he saw the gray headed to. The sharp ears did not stand up as straight as he had seen them on other worlds they were dull and the head seemed to hang the animal open and shut its eyes frequently in the sunshine it seemed sick as he looked it coughed again this was real he thought he turned on the other side to see the reality of the world which had been hidden from him before by his own loose anation. But the seas still shone and the ship was still there was it reality he closed his eyes for a long while and thought then he remembered he had been travelling north by east away from the d.c. Divide and into the Coppermine Valley this wide river was the copper mine that shining sea was the Arctic Ocean that ship was a fishing boat which had wandered east from the mouth of the Mackenzie River now it was lying in Coronation Gulf he remembered the map that he had seen long ago when it was all clear and reasonable to him he sat up and turned his attention to immediate affairs he had worn holes through the blanket wrappings and his feet were like shapeless pieces of meat his last blanket was gone his gun and knife were both lost he had also lost his head somewhere the matches in the band the matches against his chest were safe and dry inside the paper he looked at his watch it marked 11 o'clock and was still going this proved that he had kept it wound he was calm. Very weak he had no feeling of pain he was not hungry thought of food was not even pleasant to him whatever he did was done entirely by reasoning he tore off the legs of his trousers to the knees and bound them about his feet somehow he had succeeded in keeping the tin container he would have some hot water before he began what he knew was to be an awful journey to the ship his movements were slow he shook as if with the disease. When he started to gather dried grasses he found he could not rise to his feet he tried again and again then he contented himself with moving about on his hands and knees once he went near the sick will the animal dragged itself out of the way licking its face with a tongue which seemed hardly to have the strength to curl and then notice that the tongue was not the customary healthy red but was yellowish brown and covered with a half dried coating after he drank some hot water the man found he was able to stand you can even walk as well as a dying man might be supposed to walk but every minute or 2 he was forced to rest is steps were unsteady as were the steps of the wolf behind him that night when the shining sea was hidden in the blackness he knew he was nearer to it by no more than 4 miles through the night he heard the cough of the sick wolf now and then the noises of the young carob. There was life all around him but it was strong life very much alive and well he knew the sick wolf was following the sick man steps in the hope that the man would die 1st in the morning when he opened his eyes he saw it looking at him with a hungry stare it stood with its tail between its legs like an unhappy dog the sun rose brightly and all morning the man headed toward the ship on the shining sea the weather was perfect it was the brief return of summer which was usual in that country might continue for a week. Well tomorrow or the next day it might be gone.
