Thousands rally in Budapest for media freedom
Not the first restrictions to hit the newspaper delivery service
Magyar Hang is printed in the Slovak capital Bratislava because its publishers were unable to find any Hungarian companies prepared to print the newspaper, says Lukacs. He said the editorial board is already devising plans B,C and D for the event that Magyar Posta discontinues weekly delivery service.
He said one possibility would be to stuff 5,000 envelopes every Thursday with the newspapers and take them to the post office for delivery. But he said that would cost three to four times as much as the existing service, as well as being more time-consuming. Another possibility would be to sell the newspaper at kiosks and food stores. But as well as being cumbersome, those kinds of approaches would likely cost publishers subscribers, too. "As publishers of a small newspaper we cannot afford to build up our own nationwide delivery service," Lukacs adds.

Hungary's postal service is due to stop daily newspaper delivery in July. The official line is that it is no longer profitable but critics regard the step as another move to squeeze the country's independent media.

In the future, pro-government newspapers may be all you can get your hands on in Hungary
Hungarian newspapers, TV stations and media platforms have been under pressure from President Viktor Orban's government for many years now. Advertising revenues from state and even private sources have practically dried up. In recent years, press and media platforms have been bought up by business people with close ties to the government and have either been closed down or co-opted.

The government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has shut down one of the country’s main independent radio stations, Klubradio. The Media Council, the regulatory body created by Obán in 2011, refused to renew his license, which expires on Sunday (14).
The broadcaster’s license was terminated last year, on the grounds that the company had twice delayed submitting reports on the content of the grid, which would constitute a “repeated violation” of the registration law. communication vehicles.
The radio had appealed to the Budapest Metropolitan Court, where it operates, asking for a temporary concession until the frequency of the frequency on which it operates (and for which it was asking) is revived. The request was rejected on Tuesday (9).

Journalists Say Hungary Drone Law Stifles Reporting

Journalists Say Hungary Drone Law Stifles Reporting

When Hungarian journalist Gabi Horn was called in by police last October about her investigative news site's drone footage of a business tycoon's estate, at first she thought a corruption probe had been opened.
"It turned out instead we had been reported for suspected 'illegal acquisition of data'," said Horn, 53, who works for the Atlatszo.hu outlet.
While that criminal case was eventually dropped by prosecutors, it came as a new law was adopted that Horn is convinced is aimed at hindering such investigations.
The government says the new regulation on aerial drones, in force since January 1, protects privacy and sets safety standards.

(Bloomberg) -- A Hungarian conglomerate controlled by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s closest business ally bolstered its international ambitions through a partnership with Swiss-based Stadler Rail AG. Stadler shares headed for their biggest gain in almost a year.
Meszaros Group and Stadler are entering a joint venture to build a Hungarian factory to produce rail cargo cars for the domestic and international markets, according to a statement on Wednesday. The Hungarian company is helping build the $2 billion Budapest-Belgrade cargo line that forms part of China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.

Europe's misconceived cohesion | Jordan Times

Europe’s misconceived cohesion
By Bálint Magyar and Bálint Madlovics
BUDAPEST — Some details of the midnight budget deal cooked up between German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on behalf of the European Union, and the Hungarian and Polish governments remain hidden. Nonetheless, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is celebrating a victory, whereas opposition parties cheer the EU’s newfound willingness to make its funding conditional on member countries’ respect for the rule of law.
But while Orban’s critics see the enacted rule-of-law criterion as an appropriate measure against the patronal autocracy that he has established in Hungary, the fact is that the provision would have fallen far short of what is needed.
