An artist from Ohio has been selected by the U.S. General Services Administration as the project artist for the Art in Architecture commission for the new U.S. Courthouse under construction in Des Moines.
Ann Hamilton is a visual artist who is recognized internationally for her large-scale multimedia, public projects and performance collaborations. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree from the Yale School of Art. Hamilton previously was a faculty member at the University of California at Santa Barbara and has been a faculty member at Ohio State University since 2011. A seven-member advisory panel that included GSA employees, a U.S. district judge, the project’s design architect, and three members of the public including art experts recommended Hamilton to the GSA from a pool of candidates. "The selection of Hamilton acknowledges yet again the breadth and scope of her creative and compelling multimedia installations," M. Jessica Rowe, director of the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation, said in a prepared statement. "Not only does this commission affirm the prowess of the artist’s visionary experimentations, but it also underscores that women have been and will always be leading contributors to the strength, vitality, and beauty of our community." A collection of Hamilton’s work can be found on her website, www.annhamiltonstudio.com. The new federal courthouse is under construction at 101 Locust St.

A Des Moines foundation has firmed up plans for an $850,000 sculpture, roughly resembling a tornado, near a planned new entrance to the Des Moines airport.
New York City-based artist Alice Aycock will create the white sculpture, “Lift Off,” which has been commissioned by the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation. The plan is to dedicate the piece in the fall. The work is her first permanent installation in Iowa.
