Art of the invite: Brevard business aims to increase Black participation outdoors

An excited group poses during one of Black Folks Camp Too’s very first backpacking trips on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.
Earl B. Hunter Jr. describes his younger self as a “Good Times kid,” growing up on free lunch and government assistance in Columbia, South Carolina. He wasn’t great at school — he didn’t even learn to read fluently until he was a teenager — but he had a quality about him. And he had a mentor.
His name was Marion Cooper “Fuzzy” Thompson, he was a guidance counselor, and he changed Hunter’s life.
“What he would tell me was, ‘Don’t be a woulda, coulda, shoulda kid,” said Hunter. “Don’t be that kid that perpetuates the stereotype that folks have of you.”

The announcement of Manitoba's first-ever cabinet position for mental health is being applauded by mental health advocates.
On Monday, Premier Brian Pallister announced MLA Audrey Gordon would be the Minister of Mental Health, Wellness and Recovery. This is the first position of its kind in the province.
The Canadian Mental Health Association in Manitoba (CMHA) says they are applauding Pallister for the move.

Marion Cooper's lasting impact on NZ's hospice movement

With the government of the day refusing to provide financial help, the Coopers took out a mortgage against their home in Kelson, Lower Hutt, to open Te Omanga. At the opening, the McKenzies gave the hospice a cheque for $30,000 – enough to cover the wage bill for three months.

As part of its effort to reopen Cal Anderson Park, Seattle city officials said Monday that campers who have taken up residence in the city-owned park have two days to collect their belongings and clear out before municipal crews move in and remove the encampments.
But the city's announcement resulted in resistance from those staying at the park as well as generating skepticism among some nearby neighbors.
Marion Cooper is one of those who said she isn’t so sure another homeless sweep will actually make a difference.
