cnn s pete muntean and cnn aerospace analyst myles o brien joins me now. pete, let s start here. what is the latest on what is happened with the suspect and do we know anything new about what they were doing up there. reporter: sessentially the pilot lives to tell the tale, but likely in a courtroom. from two different government sources that the plane that was stolen earlier this morning, around 5:00 a.m., from the tupelo regional airport, according to the tupelo, police, crashed near ashland, mississippi. it flew around the area for about five hours. police in tupelo say they initially got a phone call at 5:00 a.m. central time from the person on board this airplane saying that they were threatening to crash the plane into one of the walmarts in tupelo, mississippi. according to flight aware, the plane flew around for about five hours, north west of the area and then over the holly springs national forest. we heard from sources that a king air like this, a beechcraf ....

anyone else. and i believe that we had what you would think would be the best case scenario. it was the best case scenario, because nobody was injured. cnn s peteman team and nadia romero joins us now live, thank you both for joining me. pete, first to you, what more have we learned? there were quite a few details in that press conference. reporter: the tupelo mayor said something so interesting, that cory wayne patterson, the person piloting the plane, apparently changed his mind. he wanted to hurt people on the ground after he stole this beechcraft commuter plane. it seats six or eight people. he wanted to crash it into the local walmart. there are two there in tupelo. police negotiates were able to get in touch with him via phone. he initially called 911. nego negotiators were able to get in touch with him and were able to get a pilot to talk to patterson on the phone. at one point they tried to steer the plane back to the tupelo regional airport and get cory way ....

several hours. you can see it on screen. you can see the unpredictable path, very unsettling for local authorities in the area. the suspect was taken into custody some five hours later. nadia romero has been tracking this all day for us. also with us is cnn transportation analyst mary sciavo. what are we learning about the suspect and how all of this came to an end? and thank goodness it did, nadia. reporter: thank goodness it came to the end it did, jim. that s what we re hearing from the mayor of tupelo. saying he was woken up early this morning by police and fire and he said usually when he gets those calls it s always something bad so he feared the worst, that this pilot would go through with his initial threat, the threat he made was he was going to take that stolen aircraft and crash it into a walmart there in tupelo. that s when authorities evacuated the walmart, they blocked off the streets nearby just awaiting that threat to play out. we know it did not. we k ....
