Australia, Japan fund law enforcement in Marshall Islands


The governments of Australia and Japan are funding two major law enforcement developments in the Marshall Islands.
Justice Minister Kessai Note announced during a Nitijela session on Thursday that the two governments are providing assistance that will give law enforcement operations a big boost.
The government of Australia will be providing the Marshall Islands with a new and more sophisticated patrol vessel for patrolling its waters.
As part of Australia s regional patrol boat program, the Australian government provided a patrol vessel to this western Pacific nation in the early 1990s, as well as stationing Royal Australian Navy personnel in Majuro to support maritime surveillance and enforcement action. ....

Marshall Islands police have destroyed over 635kg of cocaine after the cache of drugs drifted into a remote atoll.
Police said the discovery last week was the largest volume of cocaine to ever wash into the Marshall Islands, which has seen hundreds of kilos of cocaine found near multiple islands over the past two decades. The drug haul has an estimated street value of over US$80 million. ....

A small ship washed up on the shore of the Marshall Islands with no crew on it but with 649 kilograms of cocaine instead.
The 5.4 metre long fiberglass ship was discovered on a beach by Ailuk Atoll on the small island in the Pacific between the Philippines and Hawaii, reported CNN.
The ship was discovered last week by a local resident, Kolby Alred, on Ailuk, reported Radio New Zealand. The ship was too heavy for residents to move onto the beach, and once they investigated, they discovered bricks of cocaine in a large compartment underneath the deck. ....
