Should Zim stay or should Zim go?

Should Zim Stay or Should Zim Go?

Deciding whether to retain or let a coach go is not, and should not, be a trivial decision. Franchises that frequently punch their ticket for the coaching carousel lack the stability to develop players, retain talent and employ a coherent strategy. The Lions, Browns and Jets are prime examples over the past two decades. Yet, teams that are too loyal may only be delaying the inevitable of hitting rock bottom - Consider Marvin Lewis's tenure with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2003 to 2018. Mike Zimmer has been the head coach of the Vikings since 2014, having produced a few notable highlights and some lowlights as well. Given the team's recent struggles in 2020, it is fair to argue that the Vikings should consider moving on in 2021. However, we Vikings fans may be suffering from myopia after that recent Christmas Day "gift" we all just received. After all, Mike Zimmer has a solid winning record of 0.572 (good for 50th all time) while his defenses have consistently produced in the top 10 by advanced metrics. Had Blair Walsh not kicked wide left, Mike Zimmer would have at least a 0.500 record in the playoffs. One could even argue that the value of discounted contracts among its star players is in-part due to the loyal culture Zimmer has cultivated. Yet, the lack of stable performance by his offenses, inability to address offensive line play, and strong commitment to the run game does give cause for concern. Ultimately, there are arguments that can be made from both viewpoints. A more interesting view, however, would be to think through this decision from a first principles approach, rather than by analogy, to reduce any bias we may have. Using available data, I will attempt to do so here.
