Whanganui River taonga stolen during colonial siege is a step closer to home

“In 1978, I shifted back to live in Ohakune and I took a stronger interest. I met with some of my cousins in the 1980s – Matiu Mareikura, Mark Cribb, Ruka Broughton and, from time to time, John Tahuparae.
“We went to Wellington to view it and asked if we could have the object returned either to Pipiriki or to the Whanganui museum.”
However, a decision was made to move it to the newly established national museum Te Papa in the 1990s. Despite this, efforts to bring the taonga home continued, Robinson said.
The waka maumaharatanga was originally situated about 300m from the water’s edge at the entranceway to Te Kōanga o Rehua on the western bank of the Whanganui River, opposite the current Pipiriki settlement.

This river in New Zealand is legally a person. Here's how it happened
As a child in the 1970s, Gerrard Albert played on the mud flats at the mouth of New Zealand's Whanganui River where raw sewage from the nearby town spilled into the estuary and out to the ocean.
At low tide, he and his playmates would see pieces of toilet paper in the water and joke to one another: "That was the one I did yesterday."
After arriving in New Zealand in the 1800s, British colonialist industrialised Whanganui River, long treasured by generations of Indigenous Māori. The river became polluted by discharge and land clearances and the shingle banks Albert's grandmother remembered from her childhood were replaced with mud so wet you would sink up to your knees, due to gravel extraction.
