Tigers Top SMU, 5-2 to Secure Weekend Sweep at Home

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson Tigers add on to their undefeated home-streak as they run past SMU, 5-2 to secure their third victory of the weekend. The duo of Max Damm and Wissam Abderrahman clinched the doubles point for the Tigers as Ryuhei Azuma secured the overall victory for Clemson in singles.  Clemson 5, SMU 2 The Tigers brought the energy early in doubles as they were leading on all courts to start. The Mustangs took the first doubles victory of the match but Clemson was able to answer back as the freshman duo of Marko Mesarovic and Stewart Aronson recorded a win 6-3 against Maks Silagy and Julian Steinhausen.  With the doubles tied 1-1, it was left to the duo of Damm and Abderrahan to get it done and secure the doubles point for Clemson. After an intense back and forth battle, the pairing was able to record the tiebreaker win of 7-6 (7-1) to award the Tigers the doubles point and give Clemson the 1-0 lead.  In singles, the first Tiger to secure a victory was Mesarovic as he took down SMU’s Jerry Barton on court four. Barton is currently ranked No. 88 in the nation in singles but Mesarovic was able to come out on top as earned the 6-4, 6-3 win. Securing the second 6-4, 6-3 singles victory was Matt Pitts as he increased the Tigers lead to 3-0. The win marked Pitt’s third-straight victory of the weekend.  Immediately after Pitts’ victory on court six, Ryuhei Azuma earned a massive win over SMU’s Trevor Svajda as Azuma won the match 7-5, 6-4. With the win, Azuma helped Clemson clinch the victory over the Mustangs as the Tigers took the lead, 4-0.  Securing the fifth and final point for the Tigers was Noa Vukadin as he secured a tiebreaker win over Liam Krall 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 1-0 (10-6). The Mustangs were able to record two singles victories but the Tigers ultimately topped SMU, 5-2 as they completed their 3-0 sweep on the weekend.  Up next, the Tigers will play host to Furman and Wofford on Thursday, Feb. 22 as they are set to host their third doubleheader of the 2024 season. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m. on Bank 1 at the Cary Tennis Park. Florida State leads the all-time series against Clemson 21-2.  The Seminoles most recently defeated the Tigers 4-0 in Tallahassee earlier this season. Last year, the Tigers made a splash in the ACC Tournament, advancing to the ACC Quarterfinals for the first time since 2015 after sweeping Boston College in the first round and upsetting then No. 22 Duke. Ryuhei Azuma has dominated on Court 1 as of late, defeating two ranked opponents in the last three matches. Most recently, Azuma defeated Virginia Tech's No. 44 Ryan Fishback while also registering a win against Louisville's No. 72 Rodrigues. He was awarded with a No. 93 ITA singles ranking. In the same match, Jorge Plans Gonzalez registered his highest ranked win of the season on Court 2 against No. 26 Donnet, winning 7-5, 6-2. Tigers Finish 3-0 in Doubles, Wrap Up Second Day of Gator Fall Invite

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Clemson Tigers went undefeated in doubles as three pairings earned wins against their respective opponents. Trey Stinchcomb, Spencer Whitaker and Max Smith all recorded singles victories as the Tigers completed the second day of the Gator Fall Invite.  “We have some important concepts on productive and successful habits our guys are trying to learn and become more aware of. Today was another great day of competition that tested our guys on these concepts. Great to see our guys making continuous strides in doubles and in singles, we have some room to grow,” Head Coach Brandon Wagner said. “Tomorrow is our last opportunity this fall together to work through some of these. Looking forward to seeing our guys take advantage of it tomorrow in both areas.” In doubles, all three Tiger pairings defeated their opponents as Clemson continues to shine in doubles. The duo of Noa Vukadin and Max Smith defeated Florida’s Nate Bonetto and Tanapat Nirundorn, 6-3.  Marko Mesarovic and Matt Pitts took down Florida’s Aidan Kim and JanMagnus Johnson, 7-5 as the pairing recorded their second doubles victory in Gainesville. The third and final pairing to earn a win in doubles was Spencer Whitaker and Stewart Aronson as they defeated UCF’s Emilio Sanchez and Luca Hotze, 7-6.  In singles, Trey Stinchcomb earned a win over Nirundorn in a three-set thriller (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) as he recorded his second singles victory of the invite. Whitaker took down Sanchez, 6-1, 7-6 (3) while Smith defeated Hotze in two quick sets (6-4, 6-2).  The Tigers will prepare for the third and final day of the Gator Fall Invite as they conclude competition tomorrow, October 28th. Tigers Earn Singles, Doubles Wins in Day One of Gator Fall Invite

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Clemson Tigers earned singles and doubles victories as they took on University of Central Florida on the first day of the Gator Fall Invite. Two pairings recorded wins in doubles while Matt Pitts and Trey Stitchcomb garnered victories in singles. “Today was a great experience for our guys but especially for our freshmen. They are getting a good taste against good competition of what dual matches will be like this upcoming spring. Nice to see overall that our doubles was strong today and continued from our last event. Our guys learned some more lessons in singles today and look to take advantage of some opportunities better tomorrow,” Head Coach Brandon Wagner said. In doubles, the successful duo of Marko Mesarovic and Pitts defeated UCF’s Paul Colin and Mehdi Benchakroun, 6-4. The Mesarovic, Pitts pairing is coming off recent success at ITA Regionals as the duo advanced to the quarter finals. Securing another doubles victory for the Tigers was the pairing of Noa Vukadin and Max Smith who won their match, 7-5 over UCF’s Lleyton Cronje and Santiago Giamichelle. In singles, Pitt earned the win over Benchakroun in two sets as the second and final set went into a tie-breaker. Pitts came out on top with a 6-3, 7-6(6) win over his opponent. Stinchcomb also recorded his singles victory in two sets as he defeated UCF’s Emilio Sanchez (7-5, 6-3). Up next, the Clemson Tigers will compete in another round of hidden duals tomorrow, October 28th as they prepare for the second day of the Gator Fall Invite. Clemson is set to take on Florida in the next round of duals.

Clemson Tigers Wrap Up ITA Regionals

CARY, N.C. – The Clemson Tigers complete their run in the ITA Regionals after two hard-fought battles in the doubles quarterfinals. “Regionals was a positive experience for our team and we took good steps forward in many areas. We have a quick turn around for some strong competition against University of Florida, UCF, and Miami this upcoming weekend,” Head Coach Brandon Wagner. “Our guys are looking forward to taking the positives from this weekend and gearing up for the tests against these schools in a few days. This is a great building block for our guys and we are grateful for these opportunities.” In the quarterfinals, the duo of Stewart Aronson and Spencer Whitaker battled hard as they brought their match against North Carolina State’s Joseph Wayand and Marti Borisiouk to extra sets but the North Carolina State pairing ultimately won the tiebreaker (8(7)-7-(5)). Marko Mesarovic and Matt Pitts competed against the Wake Forest pairing of Harry Thursfield and Luca Pow. The two duo’s battled back-and-forth but the Deacons won the match 8-6. Tigers Shine In Doubles, Wrap Up Day Two Of ITA Regionals

CARY, N.C. – In the second day of ITA Regionals, the Clemson Tigers impressed in their doubles performances as all three duos took down two rounds of opponents to advance them to the round of 16. “We were in position in our singles matches today to take them but didn’t come up quite good enough in some important moments, but we will learn from it,” Head Coach Brandon Wagner said. “6-0 today in doubles, so definitely a great step in the right direction for this group from the first tournament of the fall. The guys are competing well and looking forward to the challenge tomorrow against some stiffer competition.” The duo of Noa Vukadin and Maxwell Smith earned their first victory of the day against UNC Wilmington’s Gabriel Hurtado and Jordi Domeneche as they took down the pair 8-2. Vukadin and Smith then took on Campbell’s Lukas Steffen and Pol Otin in the round of 32, the pair defeated their opponents 8-3 to secure their spot in the round of 16. Another successful pairing for the Tigers was in Stewart Aronson and Spencer Whitaker as they secured two victories against their respective opponents in the round of 64 and 32. The duo first defeated South Carolina State’s Mikalai Bankou and Novak Novakovic 8-3. The pair then went on to face Queen’s Universities Win Steveker and Connor Enslin, who they took down 8-4. Aronson and Whitaker will look to continue their success in the round of 16. Marko Mesarovic and Matt Pitts were Clemson’s third and final pairing to garner doubles wins as two went undefeated on the day. Mesarovic and Pitts earned their first doubles victory against UNC Wilmington’s Jonathan Baron and Reece Falck (8-5).
