Beam Suntory and Edrington switch distribution firms
12th May, 2021 by Nicola Carruthers
Edrington and Beam Suntory have agreed to swap equity stakes in their jointly-owned distributions firms in the UK and Spain.
Edrington produces The Macallan single malt whisky
The Macallan owner Edrington will take full ownership of Edrington-Beam Suntory UK, while Beam Suntory will become the owner of Maxxium Spain.
The agreement is effective from 2 August 2021, subject to regulatory approval.
The move will allow both firms to ‘reduce complexity, improve agility, make decisive investments and expand opportunities for employees as both businesses become part of larger international companies’.
In January last year, Beam Suntory’s parent company Suntory acquired a 10% stake in Edrington for an undisclosed sum.

Beam Suntory, Edrington to split UK and Spain partnerships

The Maxxium spirits JV has been around in one form or another since 1999
The two spirits brand owners, which set up Maxxium as a sales, marketing and distribution entity in 1999 with Remy Cointreau, confirmed today that Edrington will take over Edrington-Beam Suntory UK, with Beam Suntory running Maxxium Spain. The "equity swap", which will not see any money changing hands, kicks in on 2 August.
As part of the move, Edrington-Beam Suntory UK, which changed its name from Maxxium UK three years ago, will be known as Edrington UK, with Maxxium Spain poised for a rebrand early next year. The pair will continue to handle the sales, marketing and distribution of both companies' brands in their respective markets.
