There s a lot of fear around shutting down the government, but under the previous administration, the government was shut down 35 days, people still got paid, and the sky didn t fall. i would like to see the president and so far he said he s unwilling to negotiate with republicans. that is not how to unify our country. we are very divided right now. we have $31 trillion of debt. the responsible thing to do is get to the table with republicans and negotiate a way how do we prioritize spending? we re not even asking to do it in one year, like bill clinton did. can we do it over ten years? that s a reasonable conversation to have. do you have one thing you re ready to put on the table as a spending cut that you think both parties can accept? well, obviously no cuts to medicare, medicaid or social security. that s a nonstarter for either side. ....

Cuts with republicans. they want a flat debt ceiling increase and that might not fly. here is senior congressional correspondent chad pergram. it s a staring contest risking fiscal fallout. democrats demand republicans unveil their spending cuts. let the entirety of the house debate it and vote on it and let the american people see and assess these cuts for themselves prussians insist on deep reductions. the credit cards are maxed out. that s basically how you hit the debt ceiling. hawks caution the g.o.p. sass expirations are too lofty. if you wanted to balance the budget in the next 10 years, you would have to cut about $7 trillion in spending and that means you have to make substantial cuts to things people care a lot about. that includes medicare, medicaid and social security, accounting for 70% of all federal spending. that s why no one wants to cut programs which cost the most. no cuts to medicare, medicaid or social security. that s a nonstarter for either side. ....

Should be doing to get this done? look, i think ultimately, jake, this is a question of it s a question for congress. we saw this with president trump. he blew right through a series of debt limits. went to congress and congress raised them because we at that point also knew we were not going to default on our debt. and so the fact that republicans were all for spending under donald trump but now have developed again an appetite for fiscal austerity for bills they have already incurred, many which are programs they voted for. again, i agree with mia here. it s why people get fed up and frustrated with washington. the good news is it looks like people that count on medicare or medicaid or social security, shouldn t have to worry. and congresswoman love, the senate raised the debt ceiling three times in a row under president trump on a bipartisan basis every time. look at those votes. 80-17. 71-28. ....
