Jewish News of Greater Phoenix via JTA — When Michael Beller set out three years ago to get a law passed in Arizona requiring Holocaust education in public schools, the response he got was clear.
“People told me this would never happen. They were like, ‘Not now, not ever. It will never happen in Arizona.’ And that was inside the Jewish community and out,” he said.

Are We Nazi Germany?

I’ve noticed that whenever the subject of Nazi Germany is raised, someone always says something like this: “It’s unbelievable that Adolf Hitler was able to manipulate and control the entire German population.  It just seems impossible.”
Yet that’s exactly what he did.  Yes, there were some dissenters and political foes, but they were subdued and quashed as the boundless power of the Nazi regime shut down all dissent with the use of the brown-shirted Sturmabteilung or SA, the Schutzstaffel or SS, and the dreaded Gestapo or Geheime Staatspolizei.
Perhaps a bit of context is in order here.  I spent three years in Germany with the Army Security Agency involved in SIGINT (intelligence derived from electronic signals and systems used by foreign targets).  I am fluent in German, my wife is German, I have studied German history, and I keep up with current events in the country.

What is IHRA anyway and why all the fuss?

George Kalman combats antisemitism where he can.
An 86-year-old Holocaust survivor, Kalman has been active in Holocaust education for over 25 years, speaking with a variety of men’s clubs, senior groups and students who want to learn about the past, he said.
“Instead of giving a prepared talk, I conduct my meetings as a one-on-one Q&A format,” he said. “I tell them that I like hostile questions like, ‘I hear frequently that the Holocaust never happened, why?’ Excellent question, let’s talk about it in detail.”
Talking about antisemitism can be difficult, however. Not everybody knows what it looks like. “I would like to have some definition, because otherwise we don’t know what we are talking about,” Kalman said. “It’s very hard to explain.”

IHRA amendment threatens to stall Arizona Holocaust education bill

Arizona’s Holocaust education bill seemed like a sure thing. But that may no longer be the case.
The bill recently hit a snag in the State Senate, where Sen. Paul Boyer (LD-20) advocates including an amendment that contains the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism into the bill.
“Passing the bill without the IHRA definition would leave our legislative intent unfulfilled and vulnerable to exploitation,” he said.
But Arizona House Rep. Alma Hernandez (LD-3), who first introduced the bill in January 2020, said including the IHRA language threatens the bill’s bipartisan support and further delays something that has been “agonizingly close for three years.”
