bewildering. the ig sort of chides comey for kind of not going through channels in raising the concerns about, you know, oval office meeting in which the president asked him to shut down the michael flynn investigation. and, you know, i sort of scratch my head and say exactly what channel is he supposed to have gone through. is he supposed to have complained to the attorney general? well, the attorney general was just recused. is he supposed to complain to the deputy attorney general, the deputy attorney general had just arranged with the president to help fire him. is he supposed to complain to the president? the president is the subject of the concern. so what exactly are you supposed to do if you're the former fbi director who has this explosive information that is, by the way, not classified, and you have all
at comey's behavior through the lens of well, these were unclassified conversations and notes that he was taking about his interaction was the president. so of course he wouldn't return them to the fbi after he was fired. i think one of the biggest fallacies, though, that the inspector general makes in this report is that comey revealed new information about the michael flynn investigation when he gave that memo to his friend, daniel richmond to give to "the new york times." all comey said in that memo is that the president had tried to shut down essentially the investigation into flynn, which had been revealed earlier by sally yates, who was of course the deputy attorney general before she was fired back in january of 2017 during her congressional testimony. so there are a whole lot of things in here that don't make much sense that seem like they are purposefully designed in order to kind of throw this red meat at the people who wanted to see comey get in trouble. >> what is your judgment of the ig here, ben?
my opinion anyway that it is inappropriate for the former director of the fbi to blow the whistle on the president's efforts to shut down the michael flynn investigation and to me the remarkable thing about this report is that the inspector general of the justice department has effectively taken the position that if you're a law enforcement officer and the president tries to shut down a valid investigation, your obligation is to shut up. >> you know, that's what i was going to ask you. if i was misreading the conclusion of this. you know, in an inaccurate way, because that's what he says. it's a reckless conclusion and suggests that law enforcement officers if they believe the president of the united states has committed a crime, then they should shut up and they should

joining us this morning, elliott hoenig, cnn analyst. good to see you. so bill barr, this is not his first rodeo. he knows how to assure the senate that he will let bob mueller do his job, allow that report to see light of day. what is the most important question these senate democrats need to press him on? >> so the senators on both sides of the aisle need to focus on obstruction of justice. his memo focuses on the obstruction of justice theory. barr writes that it cannot be obstruction of justice for the president to have fired james comey and to pressure james comey to drop the michael flynn investigation. in the memo barr calls this theory fatally misconceived and he calls it asinine. so are you saying he is free to fire whoever he wants, is the president free to try to stop an
